Biography

Merle H. Gillespie was born 11 Jun 1895 in Cabell Co. WV,[1], to George[2] and Nora Gilmore[3] Gillespie.

He is listed as age 5 in the 1900 US federal census for Cabell Co. WV, in the household of Joseph (sic) Gillespie Jr.[4] (This appears to be a mistake on the part of the census-taker, as most other aspects of this family's census records are correct.)

He is listed as age 14 in the 1910 US federal census for Cabell Co. WV, in the household of George W Gillispie.[5]

He married Emma Zetta (Emmazetta?) Ray on 22 Mar 1913[6] She appears to have lied about her age, claiming 20, whereas census records would put her at about 14.

His registry for the WWI draft[7] shows that he requested exemption, due to being the sole support of his wife and child, Merle Jr.

Age 34: He is listed as age 34 in the 1930 US federal census for Cabell Co. WV, as head of household.[8]

He is listed as age 44 in the 1940 US federal census for Cabell Co. WV, in the household of his grandmother, Margaret Gilmore.[9]

He registered for the draft again in WWII[10] on 27 Apr 1942.

He died 29 Jul 1963 and was buried in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington, Cabell, WV[11]
