Published Biographical Information

Ira Paul Gillett is a farmer of Noble township and without a doubt has laid more tile than any other man in the county as for a number of years his principal work was ditching, beginning when he was sixteen years of age and continuing it until fifty-six. His grandfather, Joseph Gillett, came from England to America when twelve years old, and grew to manhood in the state of New York as a farm boy. When his adopted country declared war against his native country in 1812 he entered the service and served with distinction, being captain of a company. He was wounded at the battle of Lundy's Lane, which caused him to pass his remaining years an invalid. Joseph Gillett, father of our subject, was born in Steuben county, New York, in 1810, and about the year 1840 came to Indiana, and chose Jay county as his future home. He entered land in Noble township which he improved, and also followed his trade, that of wagon-maker. One of the first wagons built in Jay county was of his handiwork. When he settled in Indiana neighbors were few and far between. The Indians were numerous and wild game was plentiful. The country was covered with an almost unbroken forest and the log cabins contained but a small amount of furniture; but all the pioneers were on a social equality and all were hospitable and were ever ready to lend each other a helping hand or to cheer them in times of sorrow, and thus the years passed and all were equally as happy as their descendants who inherited some of the fruits of their labors. Joseph Gillett was married to Mary Ann Paul and five children were born unto them, viz: Emily, Rachael, Ira P., and Harriet L. Of these Emily is the wife of Robert R. Journey; Rachael is the wife of Stephen W. Journey; Ira Paul is the subject of this sketch; Almira D and Harriet L. are deceased. The mother of this family was born in STeuben county, New York, in 1816, and was a daughter of Ira and Mary (Pierce) Paul. Her paternal grandfather came from Ireland. Fourteen children were born to Ira and Mary Ann Paul. Ira P. Gillett was born in Noble township April 9, 1842. He attended the pioneer schools a few weeks each year and early in life became accustomed to hard labor. In 187 he was united in wedlock with Rebecca, daughter of Jacob and Anna (Frech) Bibler. She was born in Fairfield county, Ohio, September 1, 1846. Mr. and Mrs. Gillett are the parents of eleven children, viz.: Mary Ann, wife of Simeon Bickle, a farmer of Madison township; Emily, wife of George Kantner, a farmer of Madison township; Harriet Melissa, wife of Charles Kantner, a farmer of Pike township; William E. married Clara Runkle and is a carpenter residing in Nobel township; Anna M. is the wife of Daniel Shauver, a farmer of Noble township; Alber Russell, Bertha Viola, Ervin LeRoy, Eva Nevada are at home and Charles E. and Rachael are deceased. Mr. Gillett always takes an interest in every movement tending to improve the condition of the farmers and is a member of the Farmers Mutual Benefit Association, No. 1747. In politics he votes for men and measures as his judgment dictates, and is not confined by party ties. He owns a nice and well improved farm of seventy-six and a half acres, which he has made through his own efforts, as it was almost an unbroken forest when he settled upon it. [18]
