Rebecca was born in 1831 into a family that eventually had 8 children. Rebecca Gilliam traveled the Oregon Trail with her parents. Her father, Cornelius Gilliam, was the leader of the wagon train. The family settled in Polk County, Oregon, and Rebecca married her sister Louisa's brother-in-law, Alexander Gage. She passed away in 1862, leaving children Mary, William, Joseph, Addie, & America.
