What was Sarah"Sally"'s maiden surname-- Buckner or Gilliam? For years I assumed it was "Buckner": i.e., the daughter of Patrick Buckner & Elizabeth Gilliam. This assumption was based on an entry in Sally's grandson, Harve Wiliams (1860-1943) family bible ..
I later found in the VA State Library "Scott Co.VA Marriages,1815-1853" by Mary D. Fugate which listed Thomas as marrying Sally "Gillam" 3/6/1833. Also, several years ago I got a copy of the death certificate of Thos. & Sally's oldest daughter Mary"Polly" (7/5/1834-6/9/1912). Her death certificate which was filled out by her son David B.Alley (1865- 1942) lists the maiden name of Polly's mother as Sally "Gilliam" --instead of Buckner.
Carson Williams, (who was the resident expert on Thos. Woolsey & his descendants), before his death several years ago indicated that Sally's mom & dad never married; i.e., they had a common-law marriage relationship. It appears that Sally chose to use the "Gilliam" surname - & I chose to respect that choice & to use "Buckner" as her "Other surname".
My MtDNA results confirmed my maternal ancestry paper trail as follows: Emma Alley Pendleton (1893-1938), Nancy Jane Alley (1861-1937), Mary "Polly" Williams (1834-1912), Sarah "Sally" Gilliam/Buckner (1813-1885), Elizabeth Gilliam (1791-<1860), Juda Stidham (1770-1850).
BOTTOM LINE--it's possible (but not necessarily probable) that Sally was the daughter of Elizabeth Gilliam & an unknown "Partner" prior to Elizabeth's common-law union with Thomas - we'll never know. In my judgement, there are two probable choices: (1) use a surname based on Sally's probable-father's surname or (2) use a surname based on documentary evidence of a surname used by Sally on her marriage papers & used by Sally's daughter & grandson.
FYI - Thomas & Sally's grave stone in the Adams Cemetery up on top of Copper Ridge lists her as "Sally Buckner Williams"
The above basis for using "Gilliam for Sally's maiden surname was originally developed on 21 Sep 2009 & edited 8 Mar 2016. <jacktempleton27@me.com>

Shouldn't Nancy & Andrew then be also "Gillam"? And you might want to include the marriage date in the profile. (I need to fix Sallly [spelling], it's not possibly correct.) When ever you have any sources that may be listed, rather than Ancestry links [that do not work, for most] PLEASE list them, as true sources.
