Anselm Gilliam (-1811), who appeared in his father’s will as Hansille, married 1st Martha Johnson, daughter of Moses Johnson who mentioned “daughter Martha Gilliam, the wife of Anselm Gilliam” in his 1763 will in Sussex County, and 2nd, Sarah (Johnson) Clark, the widow of William Clark, in Sussex County 27 Aug. (bond) 1800. Anselm made his will in Sussex County remembering his wife, Sarah, and sons Carter and Matthew Gilliam (will dated 18 Oct. 1811 and proved 7 Nov. 1811). The will of Sarah Gilliam in Brunswick County remembered her son Matthew Gilliam, daughter Nancy Jolly, and her sister Lucy Newsom (will dated 6 April 1842 and proved Jan. 1844). [1]

In the name of God Amen I Anselm GILLIAM of Sussex County being of sound and deposing mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following. to wit: Imprisis Item unto my beloved wife Sarah GILLIAM during her life or widowhood a certain parsel of land to wit beginning at a pine tree on the road leading to Peter’s bridge from said pine tree south to a small branch from thence to the spring ____ from there to the Little Swamp then up the said Swamp to the road then down said road to the pine beginning further lend to my wife all of my personal estate of what kind or sort ever it may be found during her life of widowhood for the support and education of my son Matthew GILLIAM. Lastly I do appoint my wife Sarah GILLIAM and William Peters Executors of this my last will and testament. Signed sealed and delived in presence of
