He was farming his property at Lower Lawrence prior to his marriage. After He and Kate married they settled on the Hills' property at Clarenza, which had been left to Kate in her father's will. Here John planted sugar cane, maize and mixed crops. The 33 acre farm was on the bank of the Clarence river downstream from Grafton. John came on the "Roslin Castle" to Sydney in 1882, taking 4 months and during which contracted measles.
John was born in 1858.
He married Catherine Hills in 1907. [1]

The death occurred at 3 a.m. on Saturday at his residence, Clarenza, of Mr. John Gillies, at the age of 79 years. He was a native of the Isle of Raasay, Scotland, and came to Australia about 55 years ago to follow farming pursuits. He leaves a widow and one son and three daughters. The daughters are Florence M, Katherine A, and Joan F. and the son is Mr. John Gillies, of Clarenza. The funeral took place at the Grafton cemetery on Saturday afternoon, the Rev. H. W. Ramsay officiating at the graveside.[2]
He is buried in Grafton General Cemetery, Grafton, Clarence Valley Council, New South Wales, Australia [5]
