Family Tribute
Ted Glass (1914-2010)
Our beloved father passed away peacefully in his sleep one week after his 96th birthday. He was in the home that he shared with our Mom and his wife of 71 years. Dad's life began in Pukwana, South Dakota on September 14, 1914. He was the third son born to Milo and Orah (Thompson) Glass.
At the young age of 16 while being in a Boy Scout Troop, Dad saved a neighbor's life from exhaust fumes. For that action and his additional merits he was presented his Eagle Scout badge by the famous explorer Admiral Byrd. Dad went on to become a Boy Scout Master in the River Road area Troop #66. Dad also was honored to present the Eagles Court Badge to his grandson, Chad, in Roseburg.
During his South Dakota years, the Globetrotter Basketball team was snow bound in Pukwana for the night. The City Fathers offered them 0 if they would play the Pukwana High School basketball team, of which Dad played forward. The game was played at a makeshift basketball court at City Hall. Unfortunately, no one remembers the final score. It was quite a thrill for Dad when in 2004 at Mac Court when he was introduced to a retired Globetrotter, who is now one of the coaches, while they were in Eugene.
Farming and ranching during the "dirty 30's" was extremely difficult in Pukwana with nature's challenges of destructive grasshoppers, dust storms and the endless droughts. Dad left Pukwana and headed to Oakland, California for a new start. He enrolled in Hield's Business College. During the first summer vacation, he returned to Pukwana where he met the love of his life, Loretta Steckelberg. They married on June 17th, 1939, in Oakland, CA.
While the world engaged in World War II, Dad worked in the Kaiser Shipyards, in Richmond, CA. Also during that time, they were blessed with 2 children. The first was a boy named Roland, and the second a girl, Vicki. After the war, in 1947, the entire young family moved to Eugene, OR.
In 1948, Mom and Dad founded Glass Spray Service which is now Glass Tree Care and Spray Service. It is still family owned today, 62 years later. Dad did the applications, while Mom did the bookkeeping, and the phone calls. During this time they were receiving many inquiries regarding the removal of moss on roofs and patios. The two of them ran the business out of their home until retiring in 1980. Two more additions were added to the family; Peggy and Craig were born in 1948 and 1953 respectively. Mom and Dad did an amazing job of raising the four of us, giving us strength, responsibility, and honesty as guidelines to live our lives. There was always time for fun in the backyard, family picnics, bowling, golfing, fishing for catfish at Fern Ridge Lake, and planting the carp under Mom's beautiful rose bushes. They were so proud of those roses.
Being the entrepreneurs that they both were, they set out to rid the area of moss on roofs and patios. Together they formulated the product and name of "Moss B Ware". They had many hoops to jump through and legalities to prove, but they worked them out. This product can be found on store shelves throughout the U.S. On the back label you will see "Retta Manufacturing". The name Retta is taken from Mom's name.
Dad enjoyed his lifetime membership with the Elks. He was also a member of the Eugene Eagles and past member of the Masonic Lodge. Dad loved his family and was quite a prankster at the many family reunions in Sunriver. He was a very imaginative story teller and tricked his grandchildren to go on a snipe hunt with pots, pans, wooden spoons, and flashlights looking for "a pine lizard", which is non-existent and never was. He was always a great sport in any game we could conjure up. His wisdom was given modestly, and shared only when we asked for guidance.
Dad enjoyed books related to religion, the creation of the universe, philosophy, books on life and after-life. We hope that he has found some of his answers now with his passing.
Survivors include our loving mother, Loretta; two daughters: Vicki Glass and Peggy Mischkot-Roga of Eugene; a son: Roland Glass of Redondo Beach, CA; a second son preceded Dad in death, Craig Glass, of Roseburg, OR. Also preceding him in death were Dad's two brothers, Robert and Jack of Eugene, OR. Additional family members include 8 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 3 step great-grandchildren. Dad also leaves many nephews, and nieces that live out of state.
Inurnment was at Rest Haven Cemetery. To honor Dad's request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, Dad would be pleased with any donations sent to the Boy Scouts of America.
