Jonathan W Glass was born 5 Dec 1817 Suggsville, Clarke, Alabama, USA. to Mary Baker and Wiliamson Straff Glass.

Family Life

Jonathan Glass marriedMary Ann (Tucker) Glass (1823-1912) on 21 Dec 1837 in Shiloh, Marengo, Alabama County, Alabama.[1]

Children of the Union:

In 1840, Jonathan and Mary Ann Glass lived in Marengo, Alabama and registered 1 male 20-29, 1 female 15-19. With 2 people being under 20 and 1 person 20 -49. A total 3 free white people living in the household..[2]

In 1850, the Census Bureau started detailing the individuals in the home. Jonathan 32 a farmer, Mary 28, B Franklin 12, Martha A 10, James A 8, George D 6, Monterey 4, William T 2, and George Farmer 25 were in the household. Jonathan and Mary Glass' farm was worth $440. George Farmer was an overseer.[3]

In 1860, they lived in Township 14, Range 3 East, Marengo, Shiloh was their Post Office. Jon was, 42, Mary 38, B Franklin 22, martha A 19, James P 17, George D, P Brooks 5, Jonathan, Wilson 3 months, Samuel 10. Jonathan was farming and the proprety and home was worth $2,000 and personal property worth was $34,250. Franklin, Martha, James, George, Samuel were in school.[4]

From Aug-Dec 1866, there were IRS tax assessments in Alabama. Jonathan Glass was assessed 10 x 7.50 as a cattle broker. Then Glass and sons were charged 25 x 8.35 as Retail S Dealers. [5]

In 1870, they were living in Mckinley, Marengo, Alabama and the Post Office was called Demopolis. In the house were Jonathan 52, Mary 48, Preston 16, Jonathan 13, Wilson 10, Anna 7, Albert 5. Jonathan, the father, was a merchant now.[6]

On 9 May 1870, Jonathan glass was the Adminstrator of the estate for J. L. Tucker. He went to probate court 13 day of June 1870 in his name in from of Judge p. E. O'Connor.[7]

In 1880, Only Jonathan 62, Mary, 57, and Willie 19 were in the home in Linden, Marengo. It indicated that Mary's parents were both born in Georgia. Jonathan was a farmer and Willie was a laborer. All family members were born in Alabama.[8]

In 1900 the US Census Bureau gave greater demographics on the individuals. Mary was listed 75 years of age and born August of 1824. That she had been married 60 years. She had given birth to 14 children but only 7 were still living. Mary could read and write and was not employed that month. They own the farm free and clear. Jonathan was listed as 82 and born Dec 1817. He was listed as a Hotel Keeper. He too read and write English. Daughter Martha A Glass was listed as widowed but using her single name. she was 41 and born in Sept 1858. A border was in the home as a clerk, 21 year old Marvin M Dumos.[9]

By 1910, Mary 86 had moved in with son Preston 55. This time someone reported she had only birthed 10 children and 6 were living. Preston's family members there were, Rosa A 49, Elmer B 14, Copley B. Also there in Linden, Marengo, AL on Center Street were Martha A Dunning 64, and Rose Williams 60.[10]

In 1913, Mary Tucker applied for Confederate Pension. She received $16.00 on 7 April pension warrant number 37753.[11]

Death and Burial

Jonathan was buried Old Linden Cemetery, Linden, Marengo County, Alabama, USA [1]
