Biography

Thomas Morrow & Anna C. Scott Glenn family

Anna Carolina Scott d/o John Wilson & Nancy Keith Scott b. 7 Dec 1796 Washington district, S. C. d. 7 Jun 1864 Osceola, Clarke co. Iowa  m. 20 Jan 1819 Crawford co. Ind.

Thomas Morrow Glenn, s/o John & Jane Saline Glenn b. 7 May 1795 OR 6 May 1801 96 district, now Anderson co. S. C. d. 3 Jun 1874 Osceola, Clarke co. Iowa, both buried Maple Hill Cemetery, Osceola, Iowa.

Thomas' birth date may be incorrect (the first is the date on his tombstone) because, on their marriage certificate, it is stated that his parents gave consent for the marriage, implying he was in fact younger; also, in the 1840, he is listed as aged 30-40 while Anna is aged 40-50.

Thomas was said to disapprove of the Scott family's tendency to marry first and second cousins, even disowning one of his daughters for doing just that.

I don't remember where I read that Anna's middle name was "Carolina"; I'm starting to think it might have been "Creighton".

After Anna Scott Glenn died, Thomas Glenn m/2. 9 Jan 1868 Clarke co. Iowa Elizabeth P. "Betsey" Anderson Hubbard b. 6 Jun 1801 or 1804 Christian co. Kentucky d. 11 Aug 1871 or 1874 Clarke co. Iowa.  She is buried in the Union Chapel cemetery, Fremont township, Clarke co. Iowa ("Elizabeth P. Glenn, wife of T., died 11 Aug 1871 aged 70y 2m 5d).

She had m/1. 8 Nov 1820 Centerville, Wayne co. IN Silas Hubbard b. 3 May 1802 Hamilton co. Ohio d. 13 Dec 1863 Big Mound, Cedar co. Iowa.  Union Chapel cemetery also is where Samuel P. Glenn (#3, below) and his first wife Frances are buried.

Thomas and Anna and their children (with the exception of Isabel, Letitia, and Nancy) moved to near Osceola, Clarke co. Iowa in 1853.  Thomas Glenn served as township supervisor for Green Bay township in 1861.

They had 11 children (note- in a history of the Scott family compiled by Thomas F. Scott many years ago, he lists only 3 children for Thomas and Anna- Isabel Fruit, Nancy, and "Gellglen"; I have no idea what that means):

Isabel Clark b. 20 Nov 1820 Crawford co. Indiana d. 7 Aug 1881 Dewitt co. Illinois m. 31 Dec 1839 Dewitt co. Ill. William Lee Fruit s/o Thomas Clark & Elizabeth Thompson Fruit (brother of Enoch Alexander Fruit, below) b. 15 Dec 1813 Christian co. Kentucky d. 16 Sept 1897 Cherryvale, Montgomery co. Kansas.  Both buried Rock Creek Cemetery, near Waynesville, Illinois.  Isabel's middle name of Clark (apparently she was named after her great-aunt) was listed in the Dewitt County Death Register, Book 1, but it also listed her first name, mistakenly, as Elizabeth.
Letitia Jane b. 26 Sept 1823 Crawford co. Ind. d. 30 July 1846 Dewitt co. Ill.  m. 31 May 1841 Pike co. Ill. James Andrew Scott (her cousin), s/o John II & Mary Keith Scott, b. 2 Mar 1817 Jackson co. Tennessee d. 1872 Daviess co. Mo.  3 children.  Thomas Glenn forbade Letitia to marry James, but they eloped to Pike county and were married; Letitia was disinherited and the rest of her family was not allowed to see her.  However, her mother secretly stole out and visited her when she was ill and dying.  Anna Glenn said she felt that having 3 children so close together and Letitia's longing to see her family could have hastened her early death.
Samuel Porter b. 6 Nov 1825 Sangamon co. Ill. d. 20 Aug 1904 Osceola, Clarke co. Iowa  m/1. 1 July 1847 Dewitt co. Ill. Frances Orleana Hamilton b. 20 Jun 1828 Tazewell co. Ill. d. 22 Feb 1866 Clarke co. Iowa; 7 children.  Samuel m/2. 14 Mar 1866 Sarah E. Harlan  d/o Aaron & Jemima Polly Harlan  b. 27 May 1848 Randolph co. Ind. d. after 1920; 7 children.  Samuel served in the Mexican war in 1845, in Colonel Baker's regiment, Co. E, 4th Illinois infantry.  He also enlisted 17 July 1861 (another record says 28 May 1861) in the Civil War and raised Company F, 6th Iowa Infantry; took part in the Battle of Shiloh (in which his cousin Levi Scott was killed), and was a Captain.  Samuel was a founding member of the Osceola Christian Church in June, 1855.  He also served as township supervisor in Fremont township from at least 1861 to 1870.  One of his great-grandchildren was actor Denver Pyle.
Nancy B. b. spring 1828 Tazewell co. Ill. (the second white child born in what is now Waynesville township, Dewitt co. Ill.)  d. 1895-1890, probably Smith co. Kansas  m/1. 18 July 1847 Dewitt co. Ill Enoch Alexander Fruit s/o Thomas Clark & Elizabeth Thompson Fruit (brother of William Lee Fruit, above) b. 9 Aug 1828 Christian co. Kentucky d. 28 July 1863 Vicksburg, Mississippi (killed in the Civil War; enlisted 25 Aug 1861, Company K, 41st Regt. Inf. Illinois volunteers, ); 7 children (5 living in 1868).  Nancy m/2. 28 Apr 1867 Dewitt co. Ill.  Napoleon B. Jones  b. Sept 1844  Ohio  d. 15 Nov 1868 Dewitt co. Ill.; in 1870 Nancy is living alone with her 3 youngest children (although for some reason she is listed as Mary B. Jones).  She did not reapply for the Civil War widow's pension benefits that were terminated upon her marriage to Napoleon Jones.  She m/3. 1875-1880  Smith co. Kansas  John Mitchell Barton s/o Robert Roswell & Susannah Mitchell Barton  b. 1828/9 Kentucky  d. 1905 Cora, Smith co. Kansas; they lived together in Pawnee, Smith co. Kansas in 1880 and 1895.  One of her sons with her in 1880 and 1885 was back in Dewitt county in 1900.
Thomas Jefferson b. Nov 1830 Illinois  d. after 1900, probably Decatur co. Iowa  m/1. 28 Sept 1851 Lucinda Rye b. 1829/30 Indiana d. after 1885, probably Green Bay twp., Clarke co. Iowa census with 3 children.  They moved back to Dewitt county Illinois about 1861 and had one more child.  They are listed in Dewitt county in the 1870 census and lived there until at least 1874, but they were back in Clarke co. Iowa  in 1880, and for the 1885 and 1895 state censuses.  By 1900 he had moved to Long Creek township, Decatur co. Iowa, and Cynthia was listed as "S. P. Glenn".

Glenn-2909 and Glenn-1618 appear to represent the same person because: Birth date is different but I'm getting my research from here: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/F66J-QBD
