John Glover was baptized at Prescot, Lancashire, England on August 12, 1600; the son of Thomas Glover.[1]
He married Anna (_____), surname unknown, by 1626.[1]
John and Anna and their older children migrated to New England in 1635; first settling in Boston and them moving to Dorchester in 1636, back to Boston in 1653. Alicia Crane in her series "Early New England Families" says that the oldest son, Thomas, "had married and remained in England..."[2] but he would have been a child of 9 years old in 1636 when the family migrated. Anderson in "Great Migration" doesn't address which children migrated but says that Thomas married in 1652,[1]17 years following the migration. "Glover Memorials and Genealogies" by Anna Glover indicates that Thomas did migrate with his parents and siblings and lived with them in Dorchester until he attained maturity and moved back to England before 1652.[3]
John's occupation was that of a tanner.[1]
He and his wife became members of the Second Church at Dorchester in the winter of 1636 or spring of 1637; he as "John Gloover Esq." and her as "Anne Glover."[1]
John was well educated, in his library were books in English and Latin. He held the office of Massachusetts Bay Assistant (as "John Glover, Gent") in May 27, 1652 and May 18, 1653. He was Deputy for Dorchester to Massachusetts Bay General Court (as "Mr. John Glover") continuously from 1637 through May 1651 and Dorchester selectman in 1636, 1638, 1639, 1642, 1644, and 1645. He owned several acres of land in the Boston area plus lands in Rainehill, co. Lancaster, England.[1]
He was granted 49 acres of land at "Rumley Marsh and Pullen Point" in Boston on January 8, 1637 and 30 acres of upland on January 16 of the same year. In 1645 the Boston Book of Possessions indicates that he held one parcel of land: "one house and yard. Additionally he had mining privileges in Nipmuck.[1] On February 1, 1652/3 "John Glover of Dorchester, gentleman" deeded his lands in England to Thomas Glover, his son and heir.[1]
John and Anna had the following children:[1]
John Glover died between January 26 1653/4 (date of codicil) and February 6, 1653/4 (date of inventory). Named in his will were his wife Anne, sons Thomas, Nathaniel, Habakuck, John and Peletiah. The inventory at his farm in Dorchester that was occupied by John Gill and Roger Billindge totaled L1151 17s. of which L700 was in real estate; his farm in Dorchester occupied by Nicholas Wood totaled L502 11s. 4d of which L350 was real estate; his house in Boston totaled L1688 18s. 11d. of which L300 was real estate.[1]
John Glover of Dorchester was not related to Henry Glover of Dedham. [5]
John Glover of Dorchester did NOT first arrive in 1630. Records have been muddled. It was actually Ralph Glover (no relation) who arrived in 1630, John arrived in 1635.[6]
Some, without source, have attached John Glover (1638-1695) as his child. As reflected in the bio, John Glover's son John was baptized in 1629 and was not the John Glover born in 1638 in Salem.
