Biography

Nathaniel Glover, the son of Nathaniel & Mary (Smith) Glover was born in Dorchester 30: 1: 1653, and baptised 3: 2: 1653. He died at Newbury farm in Dorchester, 06 Jan 1723/4 aged 71 years, and was buried in the ancient burial yard in Dorchester. The gravestone still remains [in 1867] but the inscription is worn.

At age 7 in 1660, he was placed under the guardianship of uncle Habackuk Glover of Boston, who succeeded his mother in that appointment at the time of her marriage with Gov. Hinckley and removal to Barnstable. He was placed at school in Boston, and resided in the family of his grandmother, Mrs. Anna Glover, and after her decease in 1670, with his uncle & guardian until about the time of his own marriage. in 1672/3, age 20, he married Hannah Hinckley, of Barnstable, and occupied the homestead at Dorchester, a part of which was his inheritance. In 1674, aged 21, the homestead estate at Dorchester was ordered to be divided amongst the children of Mr. Nathaniel Glover, deceased.

Nathaniel was a tanner, the same occupation as his father & grandfather. In 1700 he resigned his business to his eldest son Nathaniel Jr., and moved with his family to Newbury farm estate (Dorchester). In 1683 he was elected constable, later selectman until 1714.[1]

His wife, Hannah Hinckley, b. 15 Apr 1650 Barnstable, d. 30 Apr 1730 in Dorchester, in 81st yr. She was the 4th daughter of Gov. Thomas Hinckley by 1st wife Mary Richards.[1]

January 13, 1718 Deposition of Henry Ledbetter (age 86) and Elizabeth Weeks (age 85) stating that beginning 1648 and thereafter they lived with Magistrate John Glover of Dorchester and described the descent of his lands to his son Nathaniel Glover and then to his son grandson Nathaniel Glover, Jr., the son of Nathaniel Sr.
