Berthina (Thenie) Goddard Sparkman was a housewife and matriarch who lived to the approximate age of 102. Born in 1793 in Patrick County, Va., she was the daughter of Moses Goddard and Jane Cummings. Probably in the decade of the 1810s, her family migrated to White County, Tenn. Sometime before 1819 (based on her children's ages) she married George Sparkman, by whom she would become the mother of eight children. The George Sparkman family first appears in the 1830 census of White County, with Berthina presumably the one female aged 30-39. She appears in Van Buren County (which was formed from White County in 1833) in every census between 1850 and 1880. Her husband George died in 1875, and she did not remarry. In the 1880 Census, Berthina is living with her daughter, Lucinda's family. According to her tombstone in Sparkman Cemetery, a family cemetery in Van Buren County, Berthina died in 1895.
