Biography

Ira Nathaniel Goddard was born March 1, 1830 in Millbury, Worchester County, Massachusetts. Ira Nathaniel was the son of Nathaniel Goddard and Rhoda (Gale) Goddard.[1]

The 1850 U.S. Census lists Ira at age 20 living with his parents and older sister Sophia in Millbury, Massachusetts. Ira and his father both worked for a shoe maker.[2]

In the 1855 Massachusetts State Census, Ira at age 25 and his older sister Sophia were both still living with their parents in Millbury. Living with them were Anna and Harlow Gale, believed to be Rhoda's children from a previous marriage or possibly younger siblings. Also living with them is listed a 7 year old Charles H. Benchley, though it is not clear yet how or if the Benchleys are related.[3]

Ira married Josephine C. Ryan on June 25, 1856 in Millbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Josephine was the daughter of John and Caroline Ryan.[4]

The 1870 U.S. Census shows Ira and Josephine and their 11 year old son Harry N. Goddard living with Nathaniel and Rhoda. Living with them are Charles H. Benchley, now 21 and in the U.S. Navy, and a 16 year old J.E. Benchley.[5]

For the 1880 U.S. Census, Ira now 50 and Josephine with their son Harry are still living with Ira's parents in Millbury.[6]

In 1900 and 1910 U.S. Censuses have Ira and Josephine living on their own in Millbury.[7][8]

Ira Nathaniel Goddard passed away March 20, 1914 and was buried at Millbury Central Cemetery in Millbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts. [9][10]
