Biography

John Claudie Godfrey passed away 1937. John Claudie Godfrey married first Bertha Lee Baines. She died after giving birth to her fifth child. John Claudie Godfrey passed away in Birmingham, AL of double Pneumonia in 1937. He was living in Cordova, AL at that time and his job was cutting timbers for the coal mines. He had lived in Dora a short time. He lived most of his life in Pickens County, AL. His father, Preacher William Jefferson Godfrey died the next day. They are both buried in Cross Roads Cemetery near Gordo, AL. John Claudie's brother and sister-in-law, Alonzo and Kittie (Brown) Godfrey of Gordo, AL gave a home to four of the children. There was six in the household. Their step mother, Lily, kept the other two. The youngest daughter by Claudie's first wife, Bertha (Baines) Godfrey, was raised by the Baines grandparents Will and Jennie Baines. She was a few days old when her mother died of what was called "milk leg".
