The new hill that was made north of town was inspected by the county engineer, Mr Kell. It was graveled by donations. This has always been one of the most dangerous hills in Guthrie County. Now it is sloping and is straight down to the creek bridge. It is known as Godfrey Hill. Jamaica News: Pg 3 13 December 1928 Guthrie County Vedette, Panora, Iowa.

Even today, 2001, the machine blades where dirt was cut out on the west side of road below Godfrey Hill still can be seen. Per Anna Hougham. Trees are growing on the sides of the hill and is a haven for deer and making driving a hazard.

Coldest January here since 1940. It was a sunny day the day of dad's funeral and thawing a little. AMGH

Dad was born 18 January 1885 in Rural Richland Township north of Jamaica, Guthrie County, Iowa. He said once that he was born down in that valley on the east side of Godfrey Hill, in those days that would have been probably called a valley, as this was before they cut down Godfrey Hill. Then they moved up to the new house on the hill. Before 1885 David Godfrey was building a new house out there somewhere as he was in Jamaica getting lumber according to the Richland News. I thing there was a shack in that Valley. Dad was born the year that Great Uncle David died. AMGH

Charlie Godfrey was on the sick list a few days last week and unable to work. ( I wonder if this is the time he had blood poisoning and he was not going to the doctor and mom had me go to Ballars and they called the Doctor. When Dr. Seidler arrived he said now Jack you know you are very sick and need me. He always called him Jack. Never did know why, could really wonder now. Huh. This is the same Doctor who sat with Dad's parents while they were dying. He stayed most of the week when they passed on, one on Tuesday and the other one on Thursday and a double funeral on Saturday. AMGH
