Biography

Milton E. was born out of wedlock to Jane (Jennie) Goins. FindAGrave - Different birth date of 8 Dec 1846. BURIAL Steely Cemetery Williamsburg, Whitley County, Kentucky,

In 2006, our family discovered through DNA testing that his father was a Baker. We descendants of Milton E. Goins continue to look for our immediate Baker families. Gravesite Details DNA testing shows that the father of Milton E. was a descendant of Humphrey Baker, born in 1713 in Stourbridge, England.
Times were very hard for a single woman in those years. Her oldest son, Milton E. was indentured to William Bluford White in 1853, at the age of 9 We can imagine how she had to work, in the fields and possibly working in different homes, to support her boys. Hopefully, her life was easier after she married John Middleton Meadors, a widower. Jennie was the mother of 3 illegitimate sons before her marriage to John Middleton Meadors. They were:
  • Milton Goins b. 1844,
  • Dolphus (Doc) Goins b. 1854
  • John Crittenden (Crit) Goins b. 1860.
They all went by the surname of Goins. Meadors was a widower when they married and they had no children together. After John's death in 1894, Jane lived the remainder of her life with her son, John "Crit" Goins.

Milton E. Goins married Sarah "Sally" Smith on Feb. 26, 1865 in Scott County, Tennessee.

Milton E. and Dempsey Smith served in the Civil War in the E 32nd Regt. Sally, his future wife, was the d/o Dempsey Smith and Judith Prewitt/Smith.

Milton E. received a pension of 72.00 dollars per month, for his service in the Civil War.

Milton E. Goins and wife Sally, lived all their married life, in Whitley County,Ky. never owned any land that we know of. They lived at Red Bird, until their elder years. Then they lived in a log cabin on Mosely Branch Rd. "formerly called Dowis Chapel Rd" behind their son, Milton M. Goins, until Sally's death in 1917.

Milton E. and Sally were blessed with a loving family of 9 children: Mary Jane, Julia "Judy" Elizabeth, Dempsey W, Lucinda "Cindy", John Crittenden "Crit, Simon Calvin, Sarah "Sally", Milt M, William "Bluford".

After Sally's death, Milton E. went to live with his son, William "Bluford", in Laurel County, where he died in 1926.
