Notes

  • On the 1723 Danvers Tax List: 'George Goold'; living in Salem Village section of Danvers; 'John Gyles' living close to Brown land.
  • His name was written as "Gold" in his marriage record and as "Goold" in the records of Lyndeborough, New Hampshire.
  • A number of his children (George, Jonathan, Abigail, Daniel, John) passed through or ended up in Sutton, Massachussetts. It is likely that he and Mary first settled there, along with his cousins Ebenezer and Joseph.
  • "I, George Gold of Salem in the County of Essex in the Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England Yeoman for ...40 pounds ... by Thomas Gardner of Salem ...title interest portion to Proportion of in and to one certain messuage and land ... lying...in Salem containing about thirty acres...where my Father Thomas Gold late of Salem deceased lived January 27, 1743"...
Signed George Gold and Mary Gold (book 90 deed 9). [All names Gold have a caret under them to insert another letter, probably either an o or a u]
  • George Gould is recorded as having as having bought, Jan. 25, 1739, part of home lot 46 and lots 74 and 27, second division, making him one of the earliest settlers in Salem-Canada. In 1768 they were living on lot 70, opposite where the town house now stands, and it is probable that he and his sons, John and Daniel, owned pretty much all of the land that is now the farms of Fred A. Richardson and William H. Clark.
  • He was recorded as George "Goold" August 1740, June 1741 as working on the meeting house of Lyndeborough, NH and clearing roads there September 16, 1741 .He was one of the original shareholders of Lyndeborough, receiving two shares in the original charter of December 5, 1753. He was a signer of the Provincial Charter of June 28, 1763. He was voted pound keeper in the first town meeting May 15, 1764. He was voted to be a member of the committee to supply the pulpit March 11, 1766. The town voted to place the meeting house in front of his house where a heap of stones was laid by the inhabitants on July 21, 1766. He was chosen to take care of the meeting house in 1775. The house was later removed by Jacob Butler to another part of town.
