Charles Matthew Arnold Goldsworthy was born in 1891 at Oxford in Oxfordshire. He was the son of Charles Goldsworthy and his wife Jane, born Jane Matthews. ^{[1] [2] [3]} He was probably born at 61 Kingston Road in the Jericho area of Oxford, since his parents lived there from the time of the 1891 census to at least 1895.

In 1901 Arnold Goldsworthy was living at 3 Beechcroft Road in Summertown in Oxford with his parents Charles and Jane and their other sons. His age was given as 9, implying a birth date in 1891 or 1892. His birthplace was given as Oxford, Oxfordshire. ^[2]

In 1911 Arnold was still living at 3 Beech Croft Road with his parents and brothers. His age was given as 19, implying a birth date in 1891 or 1892. His birthplace was given as Oxford. He was a grocer's assistant. ^[4]
