My grandfather was born in 1892 in Newcastle. At the age of 5 he contracted scarlet fever and lost his hearing as a result. He is recorded as attending the Northern Counties School for the Deaf in Jesmond, Newcastle. By 1911 he had become a French Polisher staying in that role for all of his working life. He married my grandmother (who was also deaf and dumb) in 1924. They had two children: my Auntie Betty (born in 1925) as well as my Dad. My father has a framed copy of the long service award he received in 195?. There is a photograph of him with me as a baby but I never really knew him as he died before my first birthday. He died at the RVI (hospital) Newcastle while living at 39 Ridgley drive Ponteland with me and Mum and Dad. Leaving £1925 19s 6d to my Dad.
According to my Dad he was always "smart", not very tall (unlike Dad), and had jet black hair.
