Biography

John was born in around 1775 in Chesterfield County in Colonial Virginia. He was the son of Thomas Goode and Agnes Osborne.

He was educated at William and Mary College.

He first married Lucy Claiborne of "Inglewood", Mecklenburg County, Virginia[1]. They had one child.

He resided at "Inglewood," Mecklenburg County, a plantation that overlooked the Roanoke River which he inherited from his father. He became a noted turfman, having a racecourse on his plantation. he served as lieutenant of the company of infantry acting as artillerists at Fort Nelson under Capt. William Parker in the 5th Regiment of Virginia militia from 1 Jun to 27 Sep 1814[2].

Lucy died in 1800 and he married again on 22 Feb 1819, in Warren, North Carolina, to Mary Nuttall. They had two daughters.

  2. Elizabeth Goode b. UNK VA - d. UNK TN, m. Thomas Bailey

While he studied to be a lawyer, he never practiced. He instead focused on politics. He was a member of the House of Delegates in 1810-13 and 1814-15.

He died in 1835, believed to be in Mecklenburg.
