Hannah Goodhue was born on 4 Jul 1673, in Ipswich, in Massachusetts Bay Colony. She was the daughter of William Goodhue, Jr. and Hannah Dane.[1]
Hannah married John Cogswell, Jr. in about 1692, since their first child was born in 1693, although no record of the marriage has yet surfaced. Torrey's summary of the available information supports this hypothesis, although he can cite only secondary sources.[2][3]
Hannah and John Cogswell, Jr., had ten children who figured as heirs to his estate[4]:
John Cogswell (b. ca. 1699, known from father's probate papers; he is of age by April of 1721)[9]
Francis Cogswell (b. ca. 1701, known from father's probate papers; he is of age by January 1723) [10]
Joseph Cogswell (b. ca. 1704, known from father's probate papers; he is of age by August of 1726)[11]
Margery Cogswell (b. ca. 1705, known from father's probate papers; she is married by January of 1723)
Nathaniel Cogswell (b. 19 Jan 1707, known from father's probate papers; he is still under guardianship in November of 1726)
Bethiah Cogswell (b. ca. 1709, known from father's probate papers; she is still under guardianship in March of 1727)[12]
It should be noted that the list apparently provided by William Richard Cutter, Genealogical and Personal Memoirs (no page number referenced), shows Margery as "Margaret" Cogswell. She is consistently "Margery" (or a spelling variant of that) in the probate papers, as well as in the records of her marriage, children and death.
Lt. John Cogswell, Jr. died intestate at the age of 43, on 13 Mar 1710, in Ipswich.[13] on 5 Jun 1710, Hannah assumed the administration of his estate with the assistance of Nathaniel Goodhue (possibly her brother) and Thomas Choate.[14]
Hannah Goodhue Cogswell and Lt. Thomas Perley, himself a widower with children, recorded their intention to marry on 18 Apr 1713, at the Chebacco Parish Church in Ipswich.[15] No record has yet been found to document their actual marriage.
Hannah and Thomas relocated her family to Boxford after their marriage, and it was in Boxford that their first child was born, in 1714. They had three children[16]:
Jeremiah Perley (b. 30 Jun 1719, Boxford; d. 28 Nov 1737, 19th year, Harmony cemetery, East Boxford)[17]
Thomas Perley died at the age of 72, on 24 Oct 1740, in Boxford.[18]
Under the terms of his Last Will and Testament, dated 29 Aug 1740, Thomas provided for his widow, Hannah, and specifically gave her the household goods she had inherited as her share of the estate of her "Mother Goodhue." All this was in lieu of the third of his estate which she could have claimed as her dower right.[19]
Hannah (Goodhue) Cogswell Perley died at the age of 70, on 25 Dec 1742, in Boxford.[20]She is buried at Harmony Cemetery, Boxford, Essex, Massachusetts, USA
