"Frances Marion Gooding ... was born Jan. 1st, 1904 in Savannah, but at the age of 8 her family moved back to the old family plantation "Cohasset" at Crocketville, near Hampton, S.C. At the age of 16 she graduated with high honors from the Beaufort, S.C. High School and then entered the College of Charleston which had just become co-educational. In 1924 she graduated from the college with high honors and then taught school in Charleston. In 1942 when it was known that her husband was to be ordered overseas, she volunteered for the WAAC, was accepted, and went to Officers Candidate School at Fort Des Moines, Iowa where she graduated again with honors and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. WAAC Army of the U.S. During four years of active duty she distinguished herself in Command and Staff positions. In the rank of Captain she was assigned to the Pentagon where she succeeded a full Colonel as Chief of the American Prisoner of War Division. Shortly thereafter she was promoted to Major. At the end of the war she transferred to the Reserve and continued in that status until she retired under the mandatory age statute after 21 years service."
There is a scholarship in her name at the College of Charleston:
Frances Gooding Buell Memorial Scholarships: The Frances Gooding Buell ’24 Memorial Scholarship was endowed in 1993 by Mrs. Buell’s husband, Col. George B. Buell ’22. The scholarship honors his wife who was an outstanding alumna, teacher and U.S. Army veteran. The Buell Scholarship is open to all students.[2]
And one at Porter-Gaud:
The Colonel George B. Buell ’17 Scholarship was established in 1991 by Colonel George B. Buell ’17, as a memorial for his wife Frances Gooding Buell. Colonel Buell was the first president of the Porter Military Academy Alumni Association and brought former cadets into Porter-Gaud School. Colonel Buell passed away in 1996, but his legacy and love for our school lives on as his scholarship supports a worthy Porter-Gaud student in the Upper School.[3]
Frances is buried in Riverview Memorial Cemetery, Charleston, SC with her husband George. [4]
