Biography

Mary was a Friend (Quaker)

Mary Parker was born about 1606, based on her husband James Cudworth's statement in 1673, that his wife was aged sixty seven years and upward. ^[1]

"The parish register of Northam, Devonshire, contains the record of a marriage between James Cudworth and Mary Parker on 1 February 1633/4. There are many reasons to think that this record applies to the immigrant. First, the timing would be just right. The date would be just ahead of the sailing season for passenger vessels, and would confirm that Cudworth came to New England in 1634, and not in 1632 as some have thought. Second, this marriage occurs fifteen months before the birth of the first known child of this couple, an appropriate interval. Third, Northam is close to Barnstaple, one of the outports from which many West Countrymen departed for New England. Fourth, there is no other record for the surname Cudworth in the Northam parish register." ^[1]

Anderson's argument depends on the supposition that Mary Parker was being accompanied by a male Parker who was traveling as part of the same group as James Cudworth. And we find a William Parker who married in Scituate (where the Cudworths settled) in 1639.

• 1634/5: January 18: Mr. Cudworth and his wife joined the church at Scituate. ^{[1] [2]}
• 1658/9: March 1: Mrs. Cudworth was among those fined 10s for absenting themselves from attending church worship, indicating she was a Quaker. ^[1]
• 1673: December 17: Her husband James declined leading an expedition, stating his wife, 'being aged sixty seven years and upward', due to his wife's illness and declining condition. ^[1]
• 1681: September 15: She is not named in her husband's will. ^[1]

Her husband James died in London in late 1681. His will was written on September 15, 1681 and proved on July 7, 1682. He divided his estate into six parts, leaving bequests to:

• eldest son James, double portion
• son Israel
• son Jonathan
• daughter Mary's four children - Israel, Robert, James Whtecomb at age 21 and Mary Whetcomb on her marriage
• daughter Joanna Jones ^[1]
