Biography

Spencer was born about 1808 in Logan county, Kentucky. He was the son of William Goodson and Sarah Maxey.

He married Abigail Phipps in 1830 in Bond county, Illinois.[1]

They were in Bond county in 1840.[2] The household included a white male 30-40, a white female 30-40, one female 5-10, one male 5-10, two males under five and two females under 5.

Abigail apparently passed away before 1849. He married Asenath (Baldridge) Eades on 13 Sep 1849 in Bond county, Illinois.[3]

His family was in Bond county, Illinois in 1850.[4] Sophronia Goodson, his daughter with Abigail, is listed as Sophronia Baldridge, wife of Robert Baldridge, Arsenath's brother. Thomas Goodson on this census may be Thomas Eades, son of Arsenath and her first husband.

Arsenath may have died before 1855. In 1855, Spencer married Mrs. Mary Ann Cary in Bond county, Illinois.[5] She was the widow of Wilson Cary. In 1860, they were in Williamson county, Illinois with her children from her previous marriage.[6]

In 1865, Spencer was listed as S. M. Goodson in Christian county, Illinois.[7] There were two adult males in the household. The household of his son Ben Goodson was listed next on the census.

He married Mrs. Catherine (Starr) Malone in 1871 in Christian county, Illinois.[8]

They were in Taylorville in Christian county in 1880.[9] The household included Catherine's granddaughter Mary Crow and Spencer's granddaughter Lita Avis.

Spencer passed away about 1890.[10]

Research Questions

There are two additional children listed as Goodson on the 1850 census. One was Rebecca V. Goodson, age 1. The other was Thomas Goodson, age 4. Were these the children of Spencer and Abigail, were they the children of Acenath with her previous husband (unknown Eads)? They are listed immediately after Acenath on the census roll, then the older children known to be Spencer's were listed in order of age.
