Biography

John (Gordon) Gordon Master of Huntly is a member of Clan Gordon.
Notables Project
John (Gordon) Gordon Master of Huntly is Notable.

John was the second son of Alexander Gordon, 3rd Earl of Huntly, and Jean Stewart. His older brother died before him.[1][2][3][4] His birth date is uncertain: his father may have been born in 1467,[1][2] and, as he was a second son, he is likely to have been born after 1485.

Before 26 April 1510 (when lands at Badenoch and elsewhere were granted by James IV on their marriage) John married Margaret Stewart, illegitimate daughter of James IV of Scotland and Margaret Drummond.[1][2][3] They had three sons:

In 1517 John went to France with John Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany.[1][2][3]

John died on 5 December 1517, in his father's lifetime, at Kinloss Abbey, Morayshire Scotland, where he was buried. The title of Earl of Huntly therefore passed directly from his father to his son George.[1][2] His widow subsequently married John Drummond.[1][2]

Research Notes

Holinshed's Chronicle says John married Margaret Stewart in November 1512.[4] Given the 1510 date of the grant of lands to him and his wife,[1][2] this is almost certainly wrong.
