It appears that although he was named on the birth registration as the father of William, John Gordon fell back from his paternal duties, likely including any required financial support. As a result, Ann Jessieman took him to court and the RCE added the following to the birth registration: "With reference to the Entry 109 in the Register Book of Births for the year 1863 - Insert the following Note on the authority of a Certificate in the Form of Schedule F. - "In an action relating to the paternity of a male child born 29th June 1863 at the instance of Ann Jessieman residing on Land Street of Keith against John Gordon Farm Servant Ardonald Cairney the Sheriff Court of Aberdeenshire upon the 12th day of May 1865 found that the said child was the illegitimate child of the parties aforesaid."
