James was born October 31, 1739 in Ulster, Ireland. [1]
He immigrated to The Town of Ballston when he was 17 years old and returned to Ireland. He later returned with his mother, sister and George Scott and family. They all settled in Ballston in 1774. [2] [3] [4]
James Gordon married Mary Ball March 16, 1775 in Ballston, New York. [2][3][4]

He passed away January 17, 1810(age 71) in Ballston, New York and is buried beside his wife in Briggs Cemetery. [1][3] [2] [4]
"James Gordon came over to this country from Ireland. First he came alone and settled in Ballston between 1770 and 1774. He afterwards returned to Ireland and brought back with him his mother, Martha Gordon (relict of Alexander Gordon) and two sisters, viz: Jane Gordon (who married George Scott, the grandfather of Judge George Gordon Scott aforesaid), and Sarah Gordon (who married William McCrea, brother of Jane McCrea, who met with such a tragic fate in Revolutionary times). Sarah Gordon, or Sarah McCrea, lived and died in New Jersey. Jane Scott, nee Gordon, lived and died in Ballston, and Martha Gordon, mother of James Gordon, died in Ballston, February 26th, 1775, ae 75. See her tombstone in Bridge's [Brigg's?] Burial Ground at Ballston.
"Gen. James Gordon was Representative for the Saratoga District and member of the Second and Third Congress from 1791-1795. He was a member of the New York State Senate from the Saratoga District from 1777-1804. In the Revolution he was taken prisoner in 1780 by a detachment of Indians and British from his house, and taken to Montreal, and finally to Quebec, and placed on Orleans Island, and from thence, with others, he escaped about the time of the declaration of peace.
"Mrs. McCrea (nee Sarah Gordon) left one daughter, who married a Van Dyne, and they have children living.
"James Gordon was born October 31st, 1739, old style, at Killead, two miles from the town of Antrim, County of Antrim, Ireland." [5]
