Bio

Lydia Gorham was the daughter of Nathaniel Gorham [Gorham-429], a delegate to the Continental Congress and signer of the U.S. Constitution. She was married to John Phillips and they had about 13 children 1840 Census, Lydia is enumerated on same page as Cato and Zadock Freeman, free people of color. Cato and his family were enslaved by the Phillips family (specifically Samuel and Esq. Samuel). Cato stayed in service with the family after Massachusetts ended slavery (no clear date, but after 8 July 1783) and gave himself the name Freeman. He emancipated himself in 1789 and married Lydia Bristow in 1789. One of their eleven children is Zadoch Freeman [Freeman-16141]. I believe that this is part of the story as to why in the 1860's Zadoch's granddaughter Lydia [Rextrow-6] is living with 3 of Lydia's daughters (Rebecca, Sarah, and Caroline). 1850 Census, Lydia is enumerated with 5 daughters and Eliza Francis, age 18. Daughter Lydia may be next door. 1855 MA State Census, Lydia and 4 daughters living with Mary Hurley, age 26 (image 6 family #88) Two pages back in this census (image 5) are George [Rextrow-5] with wife Lydia [Freeman-15876] and child Lydia [Rextrow-6] family #61 Lydia and John [Phillips-2432] had: the three daughters included here on Wiki (Rebecca G., Sarah Whitwell, and Caroline) and Phebe Foxcroft (1799-1874), Samuel (1801-1877), {Lydia (m. Dalton) (1804-1874), John (1804-1863)} twins, Elizabeth Barnard (m. Stevens) (1805-1887), Mary Ann (m. Brooks) (1808-1880), Susan Lowell (1809-1883), {Julia (m. Thompkins) (1813-1867), Amelia (1813-1865)} twins, and Nathaniel Gorham (1816-1881) Burial: South Church Cemetery, Andover, Essex, MA
