George Goring, 1st Earl of Norwich was born on 28 April 1585. He was the son of George Goring and Anne Denny. [1]
He was educated at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge University, [2]
He married Mary Neville, daughter of Edward Neville, 6th Lord Abergavenny and Rachel Lennard, before 1608. (she died 1648)
He was invested as a Knight in 1608. [1] He was Gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Henry, Prince of Wales in 1610 [3] and to King James I in 1611. He was Lieutenant of the Gentlemen Pensioners in 1614.
From 1621 until 1628 he was Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Lewes in Sussex. [4]
Knight Marshal of the Household in 1623 and travelled to Spain and The Hague.
Vice-Chamberlain of the Household between 1626 and 1628 when he was created 1st Baron Goring of Hurstpierpoint, co. Sussex [England] on 14 April.
Secretary of the Council of Wales in 1630
Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1639
He held the office of Vice-Chamberlain of the Household between 1639 and 1644
Ambassador to France from 1643 to 1644 when he was created 1st Earl of Norwich [England] on 28 November.
General in 1648 in the service of the royalist forces of Essex and Kent. Captured In March 1648/49 by Parliamentary forces and sentenced to death, although pardoned and freed in May 1649. He then joined the King in Exile.
After the Restoration:
Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1660.
Secretary of the Council of Wales in 1661.
George Goring died on 6 January 1662/63 at Brentford, Middlesex aged 77 and was buried alongside his wife Mary in St. John Baptist's Chapel, Westminster Abbey.
