Luke was transported for 14 years to NSW on the Daphne in 1819, aged 39. He is described as a labourer 6/2 ft tall with grey eyes and dark complexion. He was convicted at Kildare, Ireland for passing forged notes. He was assigned as a Govt. servant to James Smithers. He received his Ticket of Leave in March 1826, (states native place as Wicklow) to remain in Airds (around present day Campbelltown), also as per the Government Gazette of 23 August 1832.
He settled in Burragorang, NSW, where from 1840 he leased land - 06 Feb 1840 : Land Transactions, Westmoreland Co New South Wales -9th February, 1843. 39 Westmoreland.... Burragorang .1 1200 I Luke Gorman An area in Burragorang was known as Larry's Flat, this may be a reference to Luke.
In his will of 1848, updated 1852, he leaves income and stock to his wife , Marsella, the three children of his son John and to Hannah Hoiner. His son James is his main beneficiary, the estate "never to be sold". The property was acquired by the government for the construction of the Burragorang Dam.
--There is anecdotal family evidence that James is related to the Gormans of Burragorang.
--A James Gorman born abt 1853 in Barragarang, a student, was admitted to Darlinghurst Gaol in 1873, age 21, margin note "insane"[1]
