Abner Gott was born on February 21, 1735 or 1736 in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He was baptized at Third Church on March 7, 1735 or 1736. The uncertainty regarding birth and baptism years is per county and church records and calendar dating per the "Old Style." Abner was the son of Stephen and Eunice (Emmons) Gott, who are noted as his parents in these records.
Abner and Mary Ingersoll filed their intentions to marry in Gloucester on January 3, 1758 and were married in Gloucester on February 2, 1758. Quoting from the original hand-scribed record: "A purpose of marriage between Abner Gott and Mary Ingersoll both of this Town was entered January the 3rd 1758. Abner Gott and Mary Ingersoll both of this Town were married February the 2nd 1758 by Mr. Samuel Chandler Minister."
Mary and Abner continued to reside in Gloucester and raise their family. Five of their children are recorded in Gloucester records as follows: Solomon, b. September 10, 1762; Abner, Jr., b. August 1, 1764; James, b. September 7, 1767; Mary, b. August 29, 1769; and Charles, b. July 17, 1772. These children are listed in the hand-scribed town records along with their birth dates. A child of an Abner Gott, daughter named Esther, was baptized on Feb. 6, 1780 in Gloucester, Massachusetts Bay. No mother is indicated within the Church Records Transcript, though Mary Ingersoll was known to be Abner's one and only wife. If Esther's date of baptism is close to her date of birth, then Mary, her likely mother, would have been 40-41 years of age and at the outside limit of her bearing years.
In the 1790 Census Record for Gloucester, Abner is listed as Head of household with three additional household members one male under 16 and two females. These additional household members are assumed to be one unknown son under age 16, Esther about age 10 or 11, and her mother, Mary. The other children above listed would have been of adult age and likely independent of their parents' household.
In the 1800 Census Record for Gloucester, five household members are enumerated in Abner's household: himself, head of household, male over 45; 1 male 10-15; 1 female 10-15; 1 female 16-25 (Esther); and 1 female over 45 (Mary). Esther would have been about 20 years old at the time of the 1800 Census. She married Mark Lane in 1801.
Abner passed away in Gloucester on December 12, 1809 at about 70 years old (C. R. 3). This reported age (approx.) aligns with Amos's birth year more likely to be 1736 (versus 1735).
