Biography

"10. Stephen Gott Sr. was born on 2 April 1705 in Gloucester, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA. Moved in 1763 from Gloucester, Mass. to Gott's Island in Maine." swansisland.org

Noted [This [above] is in ERROR... the location, Gott's Island was not occupied by the Gotts until 1786 and Stephen Gott Sr. is not the Stephen Gott at Mount Desert Island in 1763] (see profile of Stephen Gott Jr.) Also Noted: The Gott family of Gott's Island was that of Daniel Gott Jr. [Stephen Gott Sr. died before Dec 1763, Glocester, MA] . There were no settlers at Mount Desert prior to 1761. So Stephen Gott Sr. was probably never at Mount Desert at all.

Research Notes

"DANIEL GOTT (V) OF GOTT’S ISLAND This Daniel signed the Bernard petition as Daniel Gott Jr. He married Hannah Norwood of Gloucester, a sister of Joshua and Stephen Norwood who were pioneer settlers at Mt. Desert. In 1785 Daniel built a house at Bass Harbor which he occupied that year. This house he sold to John Gott Richardson and removed to Little Placentia Island in the spring of 1786." Daniel Gott Mount Desert Pioneer page 13 "Daniel Gott, Sen., Daniel Gott, Jr. his son, and Stephen Gott his nephew, were living on Somes Sound near the head when Governor Francis Bernard to whom Mount Desert Island was given by the General Court of Mass., caused surveys of the Island to be made in 1763." Stephen Gott Jr. was at Mount Desert Island in 1763. Stephen Gott and his family were living on Somes Sound as early as 1763, for his name appears in the surveyors’ notes of that date.
