Biography

Joseph Gould MPP is/was a significant Ontarian .
Joseph "Gold" Gould was born on December 29, 1808 in Uxbridge, Durham County, Ontario, Canada on lot 32, 6th concession. He is the son of Jonathan Gold and Rachel Lee .

Joseph was born on the land that his father was deeded in early spring when they arrived in Canada in 1808. In the book "The life and times of Joseph Gould, the family changed their name from Gold to Gould because of Joseph. "I asked my father why he wrote his name Gold, which was a metal, when Gould was a man's name. He said that the family had always written it so, as far back as he had any record. 'Well,' I replied, 'I think I shall write my name Go-u-l-d, Gould, as I want a man's name and not the name of a metal."

Joseph marries to Mary James on January 1, 1839 in Uxbridge, Ontario. Mary was born to Quaker parents Ezekial James and Ruth Lundy on October 14, 1816.

Joseph dies on June 29, 1886, Mary dies on December 17, 1891, both at Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada.

Children of Joseph Gould and Mary James are:

1. Isaac James Gould was born November 13, 1839 in Uxbridge, Ontario. He dies on June 6, 1915 in Uxbridge. (marries Rebecca Chapman on September 23, 1862)

2. Joseph E. Gould was born July 2, 1841 in Uxbridge, Ontario. He dies on August 4, 1908 in Uxbridge, Ontario. (marries Elizabeth Stirling, 1864)

3. Charles Gould was born April 15, 1844 in Uxbridge, Ontario. Charles marries first to Alvera Vernon. He marries second to Julia "Annie" Smith on September 17, 1879 in Uxbridge. Julia Ann is the daughter of Daniel and Julie Smith.

4. Rachel Gould was born February 27, 1845 in Uxbridge, Ontario. She dies very young.

5. Mary Clara Gould was born in about 1847 in Uxbridge, Ontario. She marries to Harman Crosby on August 24, 1867 in Uxbridge. Harman is the son of Chancey and Mary Crossby. Her brother Charles was her "witness". Mary Clara dies on July 10, 1925 in Whitby, Ontario. Mary and Sarah are Twin sisters.

6. Sarah E. Gould was born in about 1847 in Uxbridge, Ontario. She marries to Thomas Watt on October 20, 1868 in Uxbridge. Thomas was born in about 1845 in Belfast, Ireland. He is the son of George Watt and Mary Truesdale.

7. Elizabeth Gould was born in about 1849 in Uxbridge, Ontario. She marries to Revd Edward Cockburn. Elizabeth dies on April 16, 1933 in Toronto, Ontario.

8. Jonathan Gould was born May 20, 1852 in Uxbridge, Ontario. He marries to Areminta Plank.

9. Ruth Alma Gould was born October 27, 1854 in Uxbridge, Ontario. Ruth marries to Thomas William Dale, son of Thomas Dale and Jane Whaley. Alma Dale becomes a Minister at the Uxbridge Quaker Meeting House. An exceptionally well written article about Alma Gould is "Alma (Gould) Dale (1854-1930) Quaker Minister and Social Evangelist." Written by Sandra McCann Fuller for the Canadian Quaker History Journal, No. 69-70, 2004/5. Alma dies in Warpole Hatch, Halesworth, England on August 28, 1930.

10. Harvey J. Gould was born May 1, 1857 in Uxbridge, Ontario. He marries to Martha Sharp.

11. Annie Gould was born October 3, 1860 in Uxbridge, Ontario; she dies young.

He is buried in the Friend's Burial Ground, Uxbridge, Durham Regional Municipality, Ontario, Canada.

Political Career

  • 1836–37 Township Commissioner for Uxbridge.
  • 1842 to 1854 District Councillor and, as a Member of the Provisional County Council established in 1851.
  • 1853 Reeve of Uxbridge Township
  • 1854 Elected as MP of Ontario, North Legislative Assembly
  • 1854 He voted with the reform group of Francis Hincks and Augustin-Norbert Morin and the Morin and Sir Allan Napier MacNab coalition of 1854 until measures for the abolition of seigneurial tenure and secularization of the clergy reserves were passed.
  • 1855 Warden of Ontario County in 1855, and Reeve of the Village of Uxbridge.
  • 1857 Elected as MP of Ontario, North - Legislative Assembley.
  • 1857 He then opposed such Hincksite proposals as the Grand Trunk aid bill of 1857 and became, in the main, a supporter of the policies of George Brown
