Disputed Child

Some, without source, (including an unsourced Find a Grave memorial) identify Francis Gould/Goole of Boston and Duxbury as an additional child. There is no known evidence that he had a son named Francis and this unsourced child has been detached.

Biography

Birth

Zaccheus Gould was born about 1589 in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, England, the son of Richard Gould.[1][2][3]

Marriage

By 1620, he married Phebe Deacon in England. [4]

Immigration

He “came to New England about 1638…“ [1] The Order of Founders and Patriots of America shows his arrival as 1639. [5]

Also in 1639, he bought land from his brother, Jeremy Gould, in Weymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony. [2] By 1640, he owned a mill on the Saugus River in Lynn, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[2][6]

On 26 Nov 1644, he bought “several parcels of Weymouth land” from Rev. James Parker.[7] Also in 1644, he petitioned the General Court for a village to be incorporated in that part of Ipswich where he lived. [2][8] His Topsfield house, built around 1670 and where he spent the rest of his life, still partially remains as listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Wikipedia: Zaccheus Gould House.

General Court Appearances

On “1656 Apr. 24, he was arraigned before the Ipswich Court for absence from meeting on the Lord's day…” [2]

“In 1659…He was presented, March 29, at the Ipswich Court, for disturbance in public worship at the time of singing the psalm. He…sat down on the end of the table about which the minister and scribe sit, with his hat full on his head and his back toward all the rest. Although spoken to by the minister and others he altered not his posture.[2]

On 12 Nov 1659, “a fine of three pounds was imposed upon Zaccheus Gould for entertaining Quakers; and… Daniel Gould (his nephew, a Quaker) was sentenced to be whipped with thirty stripes, and to depart this jurisdiction within five days…” [2][9]

Death

He died about 1670 in Topsfield, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[1]

A previous version of this profile:

  1. stated, That he was son of Richard Gould is claimed, without explanation, in an 1895 genealogy. [2] This is incorrect; he was shown as the son of Richard Gould, see p. 18, “63. Zaccheus, b. 1589, d. 1668”
  2. had content taken from The Heroes of the American Revolution and Their Descendants by Henry Whittemore (See also, below), a book focused on soldiers of the Battle of Long Island within the American Revolution; while it contained information about Zaccheus Gould, it was derivative and not adequately sourced. Any accurate and relevant information was resourced to original documents.
  3. included five unsourced children, for which sources could not be found, that were removed from text.

Zaccheus' mother has recently been marked as uncertain. The NEHGR article (119:174-176) tells us that Richard's widow was Elizabeth, but doesn't say if she was a second wife or the mother of his children. Are there additional records to help determine if Richard had more than one wife? We're told that the early registers for Bovingdon have disappeared (op cit). Are there other records to be found for Richard's family?

I marked her uncertain. Hope that's alright. :) On a cursory examination, I'm not seeing anything to source Mary except the unsourced FindAGrave memorial. It definitely needs more digging.

FYI https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gould-239 appears to be the profile of Zaccheus born 1589, husband of Phebe Deacon, no son Francis

that is likely duplicated in this newly created https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Goole-31 -

Pre-1700 profiles require reliable sources per the WikiTree certification process https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles

FindAGrave is NOT considered a reliable source and if a memorial actually lists a reliable source then THAT source should be cited directly. The parents of Francis Goole-2 are not known, please do not re-attach "Zaccheus" (also unsourced) or any other person as his father without a reliable source.

I don't find evidence that he had a daughter Frances, married Peter Shumway. Her page has a source but it doesn't address this couple.

Torrey had Peter Shumway married Frances (___) probably from Peter's will that names wife 'Frances'.

Case 25276: p. 2: Essex County, MA: Probate File Papers, 1638-1881 https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/essex-county-ma-probate-file-papers-1638-1881/image?volumeId=13855&pageName=25276:2&rId=31479645

I agree that there's no evidence that Frances ____, the wife of Peter Shumway was the daughter of Zaccheus Gould. She is not listed as his daughter in any of the referenced sources, although all of his other children are listed. I recommend that her Last Name at Birth be changed to Unknown, and she be detached from her parents.

Bio needs inline sourcing in many places, plus probably a rewrite.
