Disputed Family

A previous version of this profile connected Robert to parents John Gould and Sarah Hussey Gould of Upwey, Dorset. He is not listed on John Gould's profile, nor is he mentioned in John's will.[1]

The prior version also connected Robert with a wife named Elizabeth Bosworth. There are several publications, online family trees, and Find-a-Grave, which contend that Robert's first wife was Elizabeth and not Mehitable, daughter of Benjamin Bosworth. An error in the Hull vital records uses the tombstone inscription for "Elizabeth Goold" as validation. However, that Elizabeth refers to Jonathan Bosworth's daughter.[2]

Biography

Robert was born in England about 1645, possibly in Somersetshire. Joan, widow of John Stone of Somersetshire and Hull, called him "her loving cousin" in her 1674 will and left him John Stone's land.[3]

Robert is thought to have arrived in New England about 1665. He married first, Mehitable Bosworth and by her had eight children.[3]

  1. Robert b ca 1667; m Jane Harris Smith
  2. Elizabeth b ca 1669; m ___ King
  3. Benjamin b ca 1670; m Mary Dinely
  4. John b ca 1672; m Lydia Jacob
  5. James b ca 1675; m Mary Loring

  7. Joseph b ca 1686; m Mary Prince
  8. Mary b ca 1688; m (1) Joseph Nightingale (2) Samuel Bass

Mehitable having died, Robert Gould married twice-widowed Judith Hasey, probably in March of 1689/90.[3] She died at Hull on May 7, 1704.[4]

Robert was married a third time, probably in about 1706, to Sarah (Whitman), widow of Nicholas Cocke. She survived Robert Gould to be named in his will "my dearly beloved wife" and bequeathed 100 pounds.[5] They had three children, non of whom survived their first year.[3]

  1. Jeremiah b 12 Jul 1707; d Oct 20, 1707
  2. Japheth b 02 Jan 1708/; d Jul 23, 1709
  3. Ruth b 03 Jul 1711; died same day

This son is not mentioned in the list of baptisms in the Upway register. It is also some 12 years before the birth of John who is called the eldest son in his father John Gould's will.

If there is no other evidence than a my heritage tree, I feel he should be disconnected from John Gould of Upway.
