Biography

Mattie was a very gracious lady. She was the Sunday school superintendent at the First Baptist Church on the NW corner of Main and Ferry Streets in Anoka, MN. An article in the Anoka Union Paper on Dec. 18th, 1903 said, “The Christmas Tree program for the Baptist Sunday school will be held in the main auditorium of the church. The exercises are in the hands of Mrs. G.D. Hilliard. There will be a tree and gifts for the younger members of the school. Mrs. Hilliard is the superintendent of the primary department of the school and will arrange the program fo that it will be adapted to the children.” Her obituary notice: “Mrs. Geo. Hilliard died at her home on Friday evening, June 9th, 1939, following a six month illness. She was born May 12th, 1862 in Baring, Maine, the daughter of David Gilbert and Mary Stewart Gow. Wigh her parents, she came to Anoka in 1888. She was married to George Hilliard, who died in April, 1924. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Degree of Honor, and a charter member of the Philolectian club. She was a faithful and active member of the Baptist church, having served as president of the Baptist Missionary society for ten years and for many years she superintended the primary department of the Baptist Sunday school. Always civic minded, she was active for the betterment of the community and served on may committees for civic improvements in the early days of the Philolectian club. She was a woman of wide culture, fond of her home and family and greatly beloved by all who hd the privilege of knowing her. She is survived by her son John Clyde Hilliard, daughter Catherine Colburn, 4 sisters; Dr. Sarah Russell of Buffalo, N.Y., Mrs. Gertrude Greenwald, Mrs. L.E. Smith of Minneapolis, and Mrs. James Grant of Seattle, Washington, a brother Wallace Gow and two grandchildren, Tom Hilliard and Elizabeth Colburn.”
