William Gregg Sr. was a Virginia colonist.

William Gregg Sr. performed Patriotic Service in Virginia in the American Revolution.

William Obediah Gregg was born 15 April 1738, in County Antrim, Ulster, Ireland. His parents were John and Nancy Wood. He married Elizabeth Martin in 1752 in Albemarle County, Virginia. He second married Margaret Johnson, widow of Arthur Johnson, in 1760. William Obediah Gregg passed away 25 Jan 1789, in Albemarle County, Virginia, at the age of 50.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

William Gregg (Sr.) was born about 1735 in Northern Ireland and married Elizabeth Martin. The “Virginia Historical Magazine,” Vol. 1, reported “Acreage to William Gregg, what is now Greenbrier County, West Virginia, 25 October, 1715, 300 acres.” Greenbrier County was created from Augusta County in 1778. In 1757, court records show “William Gregg removing part of his estate out of the county.” In the years 1769 and 1777, his name – William Gregg of Albemarle County – was found in Augusta Co. Fee books.[8][9][10]

William Gregg, Sr. died in Albemarle County, VA in 1789. His will dated 14 Jan. 1789 and proved in Oct. 1789 named his wife, Elizabeth, and 8 children: William (Jr.), Sarah, Elizabeth, Susanna, Beniah, Robert, Nancy, and Mary.[11]

1. William Gragg, Sr., was born in 1737, established by Augusta County, Virginia, court records. According to Morton's "History of Pendleton County, West Virginia," William came to America with his family from Northern Ireland.

This family of Graggs intermarried with the Henchel family of Pendleton County, and according to a Henchel Genealogy, William had a son, William, Jr., and a daughter, Hannah, by his first wife, Mary Dunkle. William, Sr., secondly married Margaret Johnson, widow of Arthur Johnson, in 1760[12][13][14]. Only one child of this union is known • Samuel, who in 1785, married Ann Black, daughter of Walter Black.

MAY, 1753. Bourland vs. VVhitaker and wife.—James Bourland complains that defendant said “William Gregg can prove James Bourland a dog thief in Pennsylvania (meaning that one William Gregg informed the defendant that the plaintiff in Pennsylvania had stole dogs) and that William Gregg could prove it.”[15]

William Gragg, Sr., died 24 January, 1795; appraisal of estate, 26 January, 1795, in Pendleton County, West Virginia. Pendleton County was formed from Augusta County, in 1787.

In 1768, William Gragg, Sr., "entered 400 acres in Augusta County, on Roaring Springs, on Seneca, and North Fork of South Branch of Potomac." In 1773, William "entered 200 acres on North side of Seneca," and in 1774, "entered 64 acres on North side of Seneca." The land owned by William, is now located in Pendleton County, West Virginia.

Danie1—Smith vs. Wm. Bowyer.—-Chancery writ, 19th December, 1772. Bond of Wm. Bowyer to Wm. Gregg, to convey to him land on headsprings of Hunter’s Gully (Cook’s Creek), which he bought of John Johnson; dated 1767. Assigned by Gregg to Robert Hill, 1768. Assigned by Hill to Wm. Bowyer, 1772. In 1759 Arthur Johnston died, with will proved in Augusta, devising lands to his sons, John and Andrew, adjoining the late Daniel Harrison, deceased. Arthur’s widow, Margaret, married Wm. Gregg.[16]

On 18 November, 1773, William Gragg, Sr., was appointed vice constable of Augusta County. On 15 March, 1774, he was appointed constable, or High Sheriff of the county. As previously related, two daughters of William, Sr., were killed by marauding Indians in 1782. An interesting item about this event, was found in "Calendar of Virginia State Papers" - Vol. 3 - Letter from Benjamin Harrison, Company Lieut., to Governor Harrison, dated 6 May, 1782, Rockingham County, Virginia, as follows:

"Giving account of the oppres'd situation that ye Fronteers are in by the Ravages of the Indians - Two of Mr. William Gragg's family kilkd by them in April last and his houses burned, and signs of Indians on Sinicer a water of the Potomac discovered by look-outs he had ordered to reconnoitre the Alegania Mountin - Large bodies of Indians have been seen on the dividing waters of Green Bryer and Monongaly - from the knowledge of that County by some of the members of the Council, it will be seen how exposed are the Fronteers of Rockingham and Augusta, as also the valley and West Fork - He has thought proper to order out a full Company of men & officers to guard the North Fork of Potomac, and should like to have authority to have a sufficient guard kept up in Monongaly County, by which the inhabitants in the interior might enjoy some degree of safety and use their industry." Gregg-1208 and Gregg-691 appear to represent the same person because: I was going to propose a merge of this profile with Gregg-2626, but Gregg-691 is also a duplicate & is the lowest number, so both Gregg-2626 and this profile should be merged directly with Gregg-691. Thanks!

Gregg-2626 and Gregg-691 appear to represent the same person because: these were set as rejected, but they look the same to me. Text on Gregg-691 (with marriage/children) is for his parents (marriage date of 1714). Please merge. Thanks!

Gragg-292 and Gragg-66 do not represent the same person because: These are two different people. Per:TDSAR Roster of Revolutionary Ancestors, William Gragg Sr. Furnished supplies to troops in Virginia. His will was dated Jan. 14, 1789 and was proved in Albermarle County, Virginia, October 1789 naming his wife and 8 children. On the rootswebb by Nancy Dillinger she has him being married 2 times. Wife number 2 supposedly was Margaret Johnson but this is incorrect as he was only married 1 time. Margaret Johnson was married to a distant cousin also named William Gragg Sr. from Pendelton Virginia. I have contacted her about her incorrect info but she hasn't responded as of yet. You need to read the book in order to keep the 2 William Gragg Sr. and 2 William Gragg Jr. seperated. They were 2 different families. Grace Gragg
