Biography

Samuel Graham ... He passed away in 1930. [1]

Samuel Graham was born to Hampton and Mary Graham in 1846. His father owned a farm in Kilmore, Armagh.

He came out to NZ on the Glenmark, sailed 29 Oct 1864 arrived 21 Jan 1865.1 Adult age 22 from Armagh, farm laborer cost 14. Captain Thompson, 83 days, The Glenmark 1st voyage, an Aberdeen clipper of 958 tons. Lyttelton papers described her as a model ship throughout, with excellent accommodation for passengers. 400 passengers.

He came out with Henry Hampton and Thomas Hampton both farm labourers from Co Armagh.

He was the head coachman for Sir Cracroft Wilson where he met Mary she was a maid here. They married in 1871 at St Michaels Church Christchurch.

He owned several farms in his life time. Boxthorne,bought 7th June 1882,Bealey (Rudland estate) 2000 acres, Te Mona 65 acres, 34pounds, Balmoral, Opawa 120 acres and 23 Peverel Street.

Samuel Graham, farmer of Colombo Road, Chch, was a witness at the marriage of Seth Hampton to Elizabeth Jane Hill in 1873. Seth came from the townland of Drumard Primate at Kilmore. (From the parish cards held in NZ room of Chch Public Library)

Samuel was a farmer in the Leeston area and owned the estate farm of 'Boxthore' which was eventually passed to his son, Samuel James Graham. In later life, he and his wife moved to Peverel St, Riccarton, Christchurch and this is the property at which Samuel passed.

Died at 23 Peverel Street Riccarton Chch NZ. Aged 83. He was a retired farmer.

On July 15, 1930 Samuel died. He was interred at Sydenham cemetery. The headstone inscribes "In loving memory of Samuel, Beloved husband of Mary Graham 1847-1930." He is also buried with his eldest son Joseph Graham.
