Biography

Marion was born in 1901[1] in Carmen, Manitoba, Canada. She passed away in 1996 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.[1]

Marion worked for a time for the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, a political party, in Calgary. She graduated from nursing at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada where she stayed[2] until she married Mac McCormick in 1939 and moved to Waterways, now the Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Alberta, Canada. She was often called upon to help medically in Waterways.

Marion played the organ at the St. Aidan Anglican Church in Waterways and was involved with the Women's Auxilliary. She continued playing the organ in her church in Edmonton, Alberta after retirement there with Mac in the 1970s.

Her experience in Waterways was radically different than the life she had known before. There was no running water in the house, an outhouse for a toilet and a woodstove for heat. She learned to can caribou meat one winter as herds moved through Waterways due to harsh conditions further north and to roast moose. Marion had a big garden in the summer and saved vegetables in a root cellar beneath the house.

Some time after Mac died in 1974, Marion moved to an apartment, Oliver Place, in central Edmonton. Her friend Florrie lived one floor beneath her and they looked out for each other into their late 80s. She eventually moved to Jubilee Lodge in Edmonton but died shortly thereafter.
