Biography

James was the patriarch of the Graham clan in Carteret County, NC.

Father born in England and mother born in Scotland, James Charles was born in Canada, UK. James migrated to North Carolina between 1860-1863.

James C . Graham married Martha A Lewis July 14, 1867 in Carteret County. Still being a British-Canadian citizen James traveled with Martha, and filed a marriage registration in Ontario (marriage date listed the same).

1900 Census list birth as Mar 1838; Marriage to Matha about 1867; Newport Township;

James's grave marker list birth of March 12, 1835 [8?] and his death at December 5, 1919.

Family Tradition is that James C Graham was Scottish, immigrated thru "French Canada", fought in the Civil War, switching sides when captured, and settled in Carteret County at the war's end.

1910 census list James Birth as Canada, immigration as 1863, Mother's Birthplace as Scotland, and Father's as England.


3 sons listed in the 1880 census. in 1910 Census James C, widower, 72 year old farmer with sons Alan (18) and Elizah (22) living at farm.

The Graham family cleared land and operated a saw mill, shipping cut lumber from Mill Creek for building in Beaufort.


Dec 21, 1912 James granted a deed to Missionary Baptist Church Mill Creek.

March 30, 1915 J C Graham received a deed from Alexander and Evelyn Graham and granted several deeds: to C W Graham, to Alexander Graham, to Allen Graham, to James T Graham, and to William B Davis. August 24, 1915 he granted deed to Joel S Smith, this was the last deed he granted on record in Carteret County.

He passed away 7am Dec 5th 1919 of old age. [1]

Allen Graham filed the Death Record listing James's birth as Quebec 3 Mar 1835.
