Biography

Sir Richard Graham or Greame

(circa 1550 - 7 November 1625 or 1626)

Sir Richard Graham or Greame was also known as Grimes in records. Sir Richard Graham or Greame was also known as Graham in records. He was born circa 1550 in Scotland. Richard & George shared the arms of the Greame family of Sewerby House, Yorkshire. He was the son of Patriarch Graham or Greame.

Sir Richard Graham or Greame married Elizabeth Hetherington, daughter of Christopher Hetherington. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Christopher Hetherington of Dunecarney in the county of Dublin by whom he had issue Thomas, William, Peter, George, Richard, Jane, Katherin (Dunbar), Elizabeth, Margaret, and Ann.

In the Carew manuscripts he is described as being "a gallant soldier but".

In April 1601 he was given letters of recommendation to Sir Robert Cecil at Court, from Lord Chancellor Loftus, Thomas [Jones] Bishop of Meath, Capt David Hetherington, Sir Geoffrey Fenton and Sir George Carew. But they all hoped for his speedy return. He was licensed from the Lord Deputy to repair to England for two months and was to be paid 100 pounds.

1601 May 14: Sir Richard Greame to be sent back asap, for the Lord Deputy can ill spare him. [Calendar of State Papers, Ireland v.10 1600-1601 ] 1601 25 May: The Queen to the Lord Deputy and Lord Cancellor for Sir Richard Greame "Graeme has served us well etc. We are pleased to grant him at his suit, the towns, etc. of Rahin, late in the tenure of Edmond McMolmory and Hahinduff and Crymorgan, lately held by Lisaghe O'More, and Dowrie, held by Shane O'More, and Money ne Bollie, late in the holding of Cale O'Kelly ... in King's county. These lands are in the yearly value of 16/19/- or thereabouts and are forfeited by the rebellion of the tenants therof. ..." [Addenda, Calendar of State Papers, Ireland p.631] 1601 9 Aug: Sir Richard Greame to Secretary Cecil "There was a fight at Benburb before I came here, where we lost and killed and wounded about 60. Ferdorogh McArt O'Hagan was reported slain on the Irish side "but yet recovered" and many others were hurt or slain. Since ten they gave a bravado in the night; and they lost Lierce Lacy, McGilespicke, a captain of Tyrone's and nine more. There is a report that the Spaniards have landed at Callangebegg [Killybegs] ... [Calendar of State Papers, Ireland 1601-3 Elizabeth, v.11 p.15].

- 7 Oct 1602: Capt's erected by the Lord Depty on 9 Nov 1601 - Sir Richd Greames (Note that a Capt Thos Wynn arrived in Munster in Nov 1601). 20 Nov 1602: Army distribution Oct 1602 ... Mountjoy, Commander: Godolphin & Graeme 100 [men].

- 1602 20 Dec: Discharge from Irish Army: Horse and foot to be discharged as they may have warning ... Capts Killigrew ... (each 100) at Mountjoy.

- 1603 July 31, Warrant for a grant to Jas. Greame, Kt. & his heir, one of the Gents of the King's P.C. ... [Calendar of State Papers, Ireland James I, 1603-16-6 p.71]. 1603 Oct 1: List of the army serving in Ireland - Horsemen .. Sir Richard Greame 50, Sir George Greame, 14. Horses 950, Foot 8050.

- 1610 #593 Servitors of Ireland who are willing & may be induced to undertake & make good such quantities of the escheated lands of Ulster ... Other knights, servitors and penisoners in pay, who may or will undertake of themselves with some helps & encouragements & some of them without helps, viz ... Sir George Greame & Sir Richard Greame ... .

- 1610: Sir Richard Greame, Kt, constable of Fort of Old Court, 9 warders (Connaught province). Cavan: Servitors: Sir Geo Greame & Sir Richrd Greame, Lieutenants, 2000 acres £16/-/-, precinct of Tullaghah [Tullyhaw].

- 1618 Muster book of the Undertakers : Co. Cavan, Sir Richard Greames, barony of Tulleknougher, 1000 acres (also Sir George was mustered for 1000 acres there). In Jan 1619: Answers of Sir Richard Greame to the petition of Phelim McFeagh Byrne & Bryan, his son & heir re Ranelagh & other lands in co. Wicklow.

- Sir Richard Graham or Greame made a will dated 24 October 1623. His will mentions his wife Elizabeth, brother William, children Wiliam, Thomas, Peter, Geroge, Richard, Jane wife of Hetherington, Katherine wife of Dunbar, Christine, Margaret, Anne & Elizabeth wife of St Leger.

- Richard died on 7 November 1625 or 1626 in Lynanstown, Laois, Ireland. He was succeeded by his son Thomas then forty years of age and married. His will was proved on 7 May 1627 in the Prerogative Court of Armagh.
