James Graham was born about 1854 in New York.[1] In 1860, he lived in Sandusky, Erie County, Ohio.[2] In 1870, he lived in Chicago, Illinois and worked in a notion store.[3] By 1881, he was living in Hochelaga Village, Hochelaga, Quebec, Canada with his wife and daughter, and working as an accountant.[4] The family probably moved shortly afterward. In 1881, 1882, and 1883, they lived at 110 Ontario, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and James worked as a bookkeeper.[5][6][7]

There is a family story that James Graham was a Catholic priest before his marriage, and that he left his family to return to the priesthood. I have not yet been able to verify this information.
