Biography

Origin & Immigration

Elizabeth (Granger) Booth immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Elizabeth Granger was the daughter of Thomas, Sr., and Grace (Hasse) Granger, who were married at Eastwell, Kent, England, in 1620.[1]

Thomas and Grace Granger emigrated from Eastwell, Kent, England, departing from Sandwich on August 23, 1637, on the ship Hercules. Thomas Granger, Grace Granger and son Thomas Granger, Jr., are listed as servants. The younger children, John and Elizabeth, are not listed as passengers, and it is presumed that they were too young to be listed as servants.[1][2][3]

Marriage

According to researchers Robert Charles Anderson and Malcolm Young, Elizabeth married John Booth, probably at Marshfield, Massachusetts, in November, 1656. Mr. Young claims to have reconstructed their Marshfield marriage record, the original of which had sustained some damage, and believes it to have read, "[John Boo]th & Elizabeth [Granger] were marryed [worn] november 1656."[1][4][5][6] John Booth was known to be living in Marshfield, Massachusetts, in 1655, when he was released from his service to the Winslow family. He was likely aged 21 shortly before May 18, 1655, as he was at that time sponsored by Josiah Winslow for a land grant.[1]

They settled in Scituate, Massachusetts, where all of their children were born.[7]

Husband John left no will, having conveyed lands to his sons during his lifetime. He died between August, 1704, when he acknowledged a deed, and October, 1709, when his heirs filed at settlement deed.[1]

Life Facts

Elizabeth's father Thomas Granger Sr., died at Scituate in late 1642, and Timothy Hatherly and Edward Eddenen were appointed administrators of his estate on January 3, 1642-3.[1][4]

Elizabeth's mother Grace Granger wrote her will on November 24, 1648, leaving her house in Scituate and land called "Conahasset," to son John, when he came of age. "Allso I Doe give and bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth one bedsted with the feather bead and bolster 2 paire of sheets 2 pillowes and blanckit and Covering belonging to it and a young heifer which young heifer I Doe give with the Encrease to bee keepte for her at prsent and the bedsted and beading at my Death ; also I give unto my Daughter Elizabeth one great morter and pestell and one great kitell."[1][4][8][9] Her brother John died on October 4, 1655.[1][4][9]

Elizabeth inherited the properties at Scituate, left in her mother's will to brother John Granger. In May 1659, John Booth and wife Elizabeth sold the inherited dwelling house to Walter Hatch.[1]

On February 7, 1718-19, Elizabeth Booth, then of Pembroke, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, signed a quitclaim deed in which she included an extraordinary declaration that when her now deceased husband John Booth had conveyed the entire Scituate homestead to their son Abraham, he had also excepted and conveyed an associated meadow to son John, and that this latter "conveyance was not with my Consent; or was I then of Capacity." She then ordered that what had been deeded to John should go to Abraham instead.[1]

Death

Elizabeth died probably at Pembroke, Massachusetts, between February 7, 1718-19, when she signed a quitclaim deed, and May 1, 1721, when her son Abraham signed a quitclaim deed to Mary (Dodson) Booth, widow of his brother John Booth, Jr., reversing his mother's 1719 declaration and restoring Mary's rights to the property originally deeded to John, Jr., by his father. It is presumed that Abraham waited until after his mother's death to do so.[1]
