Biography

Josiah Grant, born 28 Jun 1682 @ Windsor, Connecticut, was the sixth and final child of Mary Hull & John Grant.

He married:

  1. SARAH COOKE March 30, 1710 in Windsor, CT, daughter of JOHN COOKE and SARAH FISKE. She was born about 1689 (date uncertain) in Windsor, CT, and died July 30, 1713 in Windsor, CT. They had 3 children.
  2. SARAH COOK August 04, 1714 in Windsor, CT, daughter of NATHANIEL COOK and LYDIA ___. She was born February 10, 1690/91 in Windsor, CT, and died February 28, 1777 in Litchfield, CT. They had 8 children, three of whom did not produce a next generation:
Elijah Grant, b. 22 Jun 1719; d. 13 Aug 1724
Jerusha Grant, b. 1 Jan 1725/26; d. 21 Nov 1736
Anna Grant, b. 30 May 1730; unmarried; d. bet. 22 Mar & 5 Apr 1784; tradition says that she was engaged to a heartless wretch named Culver, who came to her father's house on a Saturday night and arranged for their publishment (banns of marriage) at church the next day; she went to the meeting, expecting to hear it, but went home hopelessly insane, for it contained the name of another woman, who Culver married.

Josiah Grant resided first at Windsor; removed abt. 1726 to Litchfield, Connecticut. He was a hayward, surveyor, grand juror, fence viewer, and tythingman in Windsor. In Litchfield he was tythingman, lister, sergt., surveyor, grand juror, and selectman.

Josiah Grant died 26 Feb 1762 at Litchfield.

Josiah's wives, the two Sarah Cooks, were first cousins.

I have changed the relationship between Josiah Grant and his father to "DNA confirmed" based upon the research done in the Grant DNA Project. The Project has several descendants of each of Matthew's 3 sons in it, and they all are genetic matches to each other. This proves that Matthew's children all had the same father. Josiah moved to Litchfield c.1726, which was about 6 years after his mother's death. I would assume he sold the family homestead that his father John inherited from Matthew Grant in 1680 at this time and used the money to buy a larger track of land in Litchfield for his large family.

Hasting's book shows Josiah marrying two different Sarah Cooks. This is something that will need to be researched. As you can see, there's a different set of parents for each Sarah, but it still seems odd. Apparently his first son was from Sarah #1 and the rest came from #2.
