Biography
Janet Grant, dau of Alexander Grant and deceased Isabel MacGillis major daughter also of this parish, granted a dispensation of consanquinity from the 3rd to 3rd degree simple, married on 29 Feb 1848 to Hugh MacGillis, son of Alexander MacGillis & Emilia MacDonald major son of this parish. Alexander Grant father of the girl and John MacGillis present at wedding. [1]
Hugh McGillis 30 yrs next b'day, Jenny 30 yrs, Alexander 12 yrs, Isabella 10 yrs, Mary 7 yrs, Duncan 2 yrs next b'day resided in 1861 in Charlottenburgh, Glengarry, Canada West. [2]
"Mrs Hugh Gillis died here this (Friday) morning. The deceased lady whose maiden name was Janet Grant, was born at Williamstown 87 years ago. Her husband predeceased her six years ago. She is survived by two daughters and two sons - Mrs Joseph P. Driscoll, Lewiston, Me., Miss Bella and Alexander and Ranald at home."[3] "... and survived by one sister Mrs John McDonald, Carthage, N.Y. ... last week's Freeholder mentioned born at Williamstown. This was an error. It should have been Summertown.[4]
