In 1881, the Rankin family lived on Old Post Road, Dunnottar, Kincardineshire, Scotland. All members of the family were born in Kincardineshire, except as noted. The household included William Rankin, 65, a farmer of 126 acres, employing four men and two girls; his (2nd) wife, Ann Rankin, 42, born in Aberdeenshire; his step-daughter, Forbes Duncan, 20, born in Aberdeenshire; his children, Charles R., 19; Mary J., 15; William C., 10, a scholar; Jessie G., 6, scholar; Betsy A., 8, scholar; and Alexander A., 3; his mother, Mary Rankin, 92; his brother, James Rankin, 79; and Alexander Rankin, 39, a servant (unknown relation). [1]

In 1891, the Rankin family lived at Harlymires Farm House, Old Post Road, Dunnottar, Kincardineshire. Scotland. All were born in Kincardineshire, except as noted. The household included William Rankin, 76, a farmer; his wife, Ann Rankin, 53, born in Aberdeenshire; his step daughter, Forbes Duncan, 30, born in Ayreshire; his children, Charles, 29; William, 20; Betsy M., 18, a teacher; Jessie, 16, a scholar; and Alexander, 13, a scholar; and a farm hand, Robert Scott, 18.
