Biography of Joseph Grant (1660 – 1705)

(b. February 15, 1660 in Boston; d. 1705 in Boston, MA)

Joseph Grant Sr. (1660 - 1705). Joseph was born on February 15, 1660 in Boston. He married first Hannah Dassett (1670 – 1698) in 1691 in Boston. They had three surviving children; Joseph – 1691, John – 1696 and Hannah – 1697 (Their son John who was born in 1691 died young). He then married Mary Thatcher (1671 – 1708) on August 19, 1704, in Boston. They had one child; Samuel – 1705.


Life Summary

Joseph took the Oath of Allegiance in Boston November 11, 1678. The Oath was a prerequisite for any male over 16 years to become a Freeman. He was a shipbuilder like his father. He died in 1705 shortly after his 2nd marriage and was buried at Phipps Street Burying Ground, Charlestown, Suffolk, MA, Plot: 4E-46 [1]. There are three other Grants buried in the plot with Joseph: Hannah (4E-47), Mary died 9/18/1747 (4E-43) and Sarah died 6/5/1744 (4E-45)


Children with Hannah

Joseph Jr. was born on June 22, 1691 in Boston. He married Dorothy Allen on October 6, 1714. They had four children; Joseph III – 1716, John – 1717, John – 1693, Edward – 1719 and William – 1728. He was a shipbuilder like his father and grandfather. In 1751, he was sued for a debt in York, ME. He died from a fall from a Boston wharf and drowned in 1758.


John Sr. was born on September 22, 1693 in Boston. He married Elizabeth “Curtis” Goodrich on September 26, 1734 in Boston. They had five children; Hannah – 1738, Mary – 1739, Sara – 1741, Abigail – 1741 and John Jr. – 1746. He died on July 16, 1775 in Boston.


Hannah was born January 15, 1697 in Boston. Hannah married Alexander Sears on May 24, 1722 in Boston. They had two children; Hannah – 1732 and Sarah – 1734. She died on June 25, 1769 in Boston.

Children with Mary Thatcher

Samuel was born on October 13, 1705 in Boston the son of Mary Thatcher. They had six children; Samuel Jr. – 1731, William – 1734, Elizabeth – 1741, Mary – 1742, Moses – 1744 and Joseph -1746. Samuel was a successful Boston merchant and ship captain. He died on November 14, 1784 and is buried in Copp's Hill Burying Ground, Boston
