Scottish flag
John (Grant) Grant Ist of Glenmoriston was born in Scotland.

John was a natural son of John Grant.[1][2]

He married firstly, Elizabeth (or Isabella), daughter of Walter Innes..[1][3][4][5] They had issue:

  1. Isobella[4][6][7]

The marriage ended in divorce[7] as John committed adultery with Agnes Fraser.[8]

In 1544, after the divorce from Elizabeth, he married Agnes, (daughter of William Fraser) by papal dispensation.[1][4][7] The dispensation was required not because of John's near relation to Agnes rather the near relation of Elizabeth and Agnes.[8] They had issue:

  1. Patrick[4][6][7]

He also had three natural sons:[7]

  1. John Roy Grant of Carron[6]
  2. James Grant of Wester Elchies[6]
  3. Alexander Grant[6]

John died in Sep 1548.[1][7][9]

Research Notes

"Landed Families of Perthshire" by Gordon McGregor calls him John Grant of Glenmoriston. The progenitor of the Grants of Glenmoriston was John Mor, natural son of John Grant, second laird of Freuchie. John Mor Grant received a Crown charter of the lands of Glenmoriston in 1509.
William of Guisachan had one daughter, Agnes, married in 1546 (contract dated 1st June) to John Grant of Culcabock, known as "Iain-Mor-Tomantoul ;" she in the Sasine on Culcabock, dated 7th August, 1546, being termed" honesta mulier Agneta Fraser, filia. Gulielmi Fraser de Guisachan," which would indicate that William was alive. An apostolic license for their marriage, without distinguishing designations, is in my possession, dated last April, 1544. The Genealogy says there were two sons-Patrick and John, and that lain Mor subsequently married the widow of Erracht (Ewen, first of the race of the "Boddachs" of Erracht).

I will consider posting the yDNA profile info for this family in the near future. i've researched it for 10 years now and the info is available for public consumption in FTDNA's Grant surname project DNA results.

See new source in son Patrick's profile. If someone could add them to this pre1500 profile it would satisfy the source request.

Family trees are not considered a reliable source for pre-1700 profiles, and certainly not for pre-1500 profiles.

The source was marriage and birth records, or historical analysis. I never rely on family trees except to start a connection. I'm a scientist, i only deal with facts. Thanks, if you can get me a pre 1500 badge.

Im still working on profiles that have poor or no sources, edpecially ones that I am the profile manager. I signed on to the Scotland Project, haven't received whether I'm getting a badge or not. I've been a part of wikitree for ten years now.

John the FS tree link that you added to his son Patrick's profile is a tree for this John, which you couldn't edit. But when you look at that link, there is not one source on that profile. There are quite a few Notes, but there is also a discussion about 'unwise and incorrect merging of John Grants'.

Remember that Pre-1500 should not have family trees as a source since they are not reliable. Pre-1700 should not have only family trees, again, because they are not reliable. Other sources should be on the profiles.
