Notes

Note N61Richard Grantham was born 16 March 1754 in Dobbs Co, North Carolina. He came to what is now Hawkins Co, Tennessee after the Revolutionary War. He served a first term of six months as a Corporal. He then volunteered for a second term as Sergeant Major in the place of his cousin Joshua who had a big family. He married FRANCES AMIS, second daughter of CAPTAIndiana THOMAS AMIS, one of the earliest settlers in Hawkins Co, on 14 April 1785. He died 23 June 1846, and she died 27 April 1872, both in Grainger Co, Tennessee. They were buried in the Grantham Cemetery in Grainger Co, Tennessee. This cemetery was flooded by Cherokee Lake when the Tennessee Valley Project was constructed. This cemetery was designated Grantham Cemetery No. 54 on TVA Land Map and Track No. Ck 946 and is 1.8 miles from the North End of the Olen R Marshall Bridge, about 200 or 300 feet on the right side of the roaDThe 1810 Federal Census shows him owning 185 acres and one slave. The following is an extraction from a letter from A DHiller, Assistant to the Administrator in response to a request of Mrs J Wallace Bracey for military and pension records dated February 5, 1932: "While residing in Dobbs Co, North Carolina, he enlisted July 22, 1775, served as a private and corporal in Captains Thomas Lynch and Glen Brayton's Company under Colonel Charles Cotesworth Pinkney in the South Carolina Troops, was in one engagement, name of engagement not stated, and was discharged August 4, 1778; he again enlisted, date not given, served as a substitute for Joshua Grantham (relationship to soldier not known), as sargeant major in Captain John Kennedy's Company, Colonel William Tazovell's (?) North Carolina Regiment, and was in the Battle of Brier Creek, length of this service was five months. After the Revolution, he moved to Hawkins Co, Tennessee then to Grainger Co, Tennessee." It has been noted elsewhere that Joshua Grantham was Richards brother who had a young family at this time and that this was the motivation for Richard to serve in his place.[Grantham Edward I Descendants.ged] The Heritage of Wayne Co states that at the time of the Revolutionary War, Joshua Grantham's children were young, so Joshua's first cousin, Richard Grantham (son of John), who was not married at the time, voluteered in Joshua's place. He served six months as a private and 18 months as a corporal, during which time he took part in the Battle of Brier Creek.[RobinsonRobertson Descendants to B Winfield.FTW] *Under Richard Grantham, Sr his death date is shown as 22 June 1846. In Notes it is shown as 23 June 1846. Not sure which is correct. Will have to check the date.
