Biography

Cross of St George
Thomas Grenville was born in England.

According to Weis in The Magna Charta Sureties, 1215, Fifth edition (1999): p. 29 [Line 22-10], Philippa Bonville married William Grenville after 12 May 1427. So it is most probable that Thomas Grenville was born sometime around 1430. We can support this date of birth for Thomas Grenville because of the known date of marriage to his first wife, Anne Courtenay, by the contract date of 7 Sep 1447, when Thomas was roughly 16/17 years old.

“In 27th Henry VI (1449) he is styled Thomas Greynvile, son and heir to William Greynvile, Esquire, and with Anne his wife, grants to Richard Ashrigge a tenement in Bideford, “doing suit to our courts,” shewing that his father was then still alive.” [1]

It would appear that Thomas's father was on the point of death at this time, because Thomas's mother Philippa was remarried by 1451.

First marriage

On 7 September 1447, Edmund Lacy, Bishop of Exeter issued a licence to a curate of the parish church of Atherington to marry Thomas Grenville and Anne the daughter of Philip Courtenay in a chapel within that parish. (Licencia celebrandi matrimonium inter Thomam Greynefild et Annam filliam Philippi Curtenay in capella infra parochiam de Atheryngton)[2]

It's not clear if the marriage actually took place, though one source states it occurred in the Umberleigh Chapel in the Atherington Parish on the date the licence was issued.[3] If it did there appears to be no issue from this marriage.

Second marriage

“He married secondly, Elizabeth, sister to Sir Theobald Gorges, Kt., and dying 1st Richard III, left issue, two sons, viz., Thomas, who succeeded him, and John, a Priest, who was introduced to the living of Bideford by Archbishop Warham, 21st May 1504, and died in 1509.” [4]

This profile shows Thomas Grenville (Grenville-92) has a DOB of abt.1430. His mother Philippa Bonville (Bonville-4) has a DOB of abt.1424. His mother could not have bore him at age 6. Though these dates are prefixed by abt., it would be better to show the date as uncertain as abt. implies "in close proximity". Please recheck.

Thanks John; I changed Thomas's birth year guesstimate to 1430.

You have Thomas Grenville I as being born c. 1425 on this profile, where his parents are listed as William Grenville and Philippa Bonville. I just wanted to comment on the alleged birthdate of Thomas Grenville I as being c. 1425. According to Weis in The Magna Charta Sureties, 1215 fifth ed. (1999): p. 29 [Line 22-10], Philippa Bonville married William Grenville after 12 May 1427. So it is most probable that Thomas Grenville I was born sometime around 1430. We can support this date of birth for Thomas Grenville I because of the known date of marriage to his first wife, Anne Courtenay, by the contract date of 7 Sep 1447, when Thomas was roughly 16/17 years old.

Just wanted to share that with you, since Thomas Grenville I's parents weren't even married yet in 1425. We also know that Thomas Grenville I was born legitimately. (from Kelly Murphy)

Grenfield-2 and Grenville-92 appear to represent the same person because: Please merge INTO Grenville-92.

Granville-13 and Grenville-92 appear to represent the same person because: There's quite a bit of documentation arround showing Thomas married firstly Anne Courtenay in Sept 1447 and later on Elizabeth Gorges
